JOHN R. STONE, OF ROUND GROVE, KANSAS.
Ill/l PROVEMENT IN STOVE- GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,735, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. STONE, of Round Grove, in the county of Washington and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of grates for cooking or parlor stoves which are arranged to be adjusted high or low in the stove according to the quantity of fire it is desired to have, and provided with means for adjusting and holding them at any height. The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the suspending device with the grate, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a plan view of a stove provided with an adjustable grate according to my invention, with a part of the top plate broken out. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the linexw of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 00 a: of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the grate, which I prefer to have provided with sides B, forming a tire-pot independent of the sides of the ordinary firepot of the stove. In this example it is suspended at one end by a yoke, 0, extending down through the top plate D and having notches E above the plate to be engaged by vibrating catch-plates or buttons F, the ends of which swing into and out of the notches, as required for shifting the yoke high or low. Near the other end it is mounted on the end of a crooked lever, 0, extending through a hole, H, in the side of the fire-box,which serves as the fulcrum of the lever. Outside of the fire-box is a pawl, I, pivoted to the lever a short distance from the side of the fire-pot, and engaging with the notches R in the stove side plate above the lever. 7
By shifting this pawl from one to another of the notches the grate can be raised or lowered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The bent lever G, pawl I, notched yoke G, and catch plates or buttons F, in combination with the grate A, substantially as shown and described.
