UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE,
EZRA DEWITT, OF BELVIDERE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPR OVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
Speoifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,&96, dated January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EZRA DEwIrr, of Belvidere, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stove-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a top View of my grate. Fig. 2 is a sectionof same in perspeotive.
This invention has relation to grates for cylinder and base burning stoves and it consists in the Construction and novel arrangement of au upper grating, placed centrally above a lower grating in such a inaner that an intermediate space, capable of variation, will be left between the two grat- Tle object of this invention is to provide a pulverizing-grate of efficient action for such stoves,
. which will, at the same time, be capable of a dumping movement, and of a lorizontally oseillating or shaking action.
In the acconpanying drawing, the letter A designates the lower grating, circular in form, and provided at its central portion with a step, a, which serves to keep the gratings a certain distance asunder. Sometimes I prefer using a loose Washer for this purpose. To this grating are attached the journals or pivots b, upon which the grate vibrates vertically in the dumping operation. These journalsor pivots are somewhat bent upward in their course, to bring them as nearly as possible in line with the center of gravity of the entire grate, consistin g, as above mentioned, of two gratings pivoted together. The upper grating B is concentric with the lower grating, and rests upon the step a. It may be of the same diameter with the lower gratng, or of a slightly-diii'erent diameter, depending upon the slope lines of the wall of the fire pot. This grating is provided with the sockets or lugs c, which serve to receive the end of the shaking-lever. Both gratings are perforated centrally for the passage of the pintle or pivot O, which is a headed and slotted bolt. This bolt is inserted into the upper grate first, and then through the T lower grate, its head serving to keep it in proper position. Through the slot, near the spect to each other, the angle being rather' acute, in order that in the shaking operation the bars may be brought parallel with each other at the end of each oscillation, to allow a free passage to the ashes.
It is apparent that the large cinders which descend between the gratings will be rapidly pulverized by the oscillating action. If these cinders are indurated or clnker-like the upper grating will be caused to rise by their interposition between the two gratings, and thus fracture of the bars will be prevented. At the same time the weight of the upper gratin g and its load of coal will cause such cinders to be rapidly reduced by the oscillations of the upper grate to a size sufficient for passage through the lower grating.
In the dunping operation both gratings are usually cleared of their loa-ds, that which is between the gratings passing freely out between the perimeters thereof.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the lower circular dumpin g-grate A, the intermediate collar or washer a, the upper horizontally-rotatin g grate B, and the elongated central pivot-pin C, arrauged to allow the upper grate to rise as obstructions increase between the said grates, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EZRA DEWITT.
