.. NI'IED STATES MARVIN PIERCE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,592, dated June 15, 1875; application filed December 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN PIERCE, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves and Furnaces and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to augment and perpetuate the heat of fires in stoves, furnaces, or drums attached thereto; and to this end the nature of my invention consists in filling the stove, furnace, or drum above the fire with brick, stone, or iron or other suitable material, so arranged as to form flues through and around said filling for the passage of the flame and heat, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to makeand use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, with the top plate removed.
A represents a stove of any ordinary construction, of which E is the fire-chamber or fire-pot. Above the fire-pot B the stove is filled with brick, stone, iro n, or other suitable material, as shown at G. This filling is made in sections of any suitable size and shape, and arranged in one, two, or more layers in any desired manner, only so as to form lines a a, through and around the filling, to allow the smoke, heat, 850., to pass upward. This fill ing rapidly gets heated, and retains the heat for a long time, so that when the fire gets low, or even after it is out entirely, heat will be thrown out from said filling. As long as the fire is kept up in the stove the heat radiated therefrom will be greatly increased by the filling.
This invention may be applied for the same purpose, and equally well to any stove or furnace,or to drums attached to or connected with such stove or furnace.
Having thus fully described my intention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a stove, A, having fire-chamber B, of the sectional filling O of brick, stone, or other suitable material, arranged above the fire-charnber, and in layers to form the lines a a through and around the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of November, 1874.
