Description

S. WEISS.
PICTURE FRAME.
APPLICATION FILED Nov. 2o. 1919..

similar reference characters are used to des- To @ZZ/whom it may concern.' 'y i Be it known that I,'SIM0N Weiss, a citizen of the United Statesfand resident of New York, in the county of Bronx 'and State of New4 York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Frames, ofl which lthe following is a full, clear, and exactspecification. l I
This inventionV relates tol picture and lhas for one of its objects to provide an improved form of rigid back member Yand simplified means for detachably, securing said back member bodily tothe frame. f
, Another object is to providewimproved means oflsecuring a prop to the'ba'ck member so that the extendingy of the'y prop will not tend to loosen its -connectionwitli said back member.V A further object is to pro-v vide improvedV means for attachingy la, hanger ring to the back member 1ndepend' ently of the frame.v Still another object is to provide simplified meansv for fastening the glass in the frame without danger of breakage. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein ignate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a broken rear elevation of a frame constructed substantially in accord-' ance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, showing the prop extended. K
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the top' portion of a frame of a modified construction, and Y Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. x
The frame 1 may be of any suitable configuration and is formed with the groove 2 at its inner rear edge to receive the glass 3 and picture 5. Said glass is held invplace by staples .l having rounded corner bends which insure against breakage and willV not mar the picture. v
The rear of the frame is covered by a back member 6 of rigid material, preferably cardboard covered both outside andres. .srMoiv wni'ssior avenir', I

thesame sizeasthe frame 'solasftooverlapl all ofthe walls thereof." 4'Said back member is detachably secured to the" frame by flex.l
ible 'tongues .7, :each having "its inner end fastened to the rear of the frame by a nail' SalI-d adapted-to'fhave' its-'outer free end 'l i portion'bent as atv9 over the edge 'ofthe back member as illustrated.v When the. back' 1s tobe removed','said tongues Pare bent"v outward, as indicatedat'the upper!y right hand corneroffFg. 1; id f v.The back Imemberfhasl a` prop '10 hingedthereto by havingits' upper-end portion 12 inserted through 'a slit 11'in'the backv member and outer covering' 60 thereof and con-J cealed' between said back member andthe innercoveringGO thereof, said-prop being scored' at 19 adjacent tothe slit so as to peri mit an easy hinge movement .withoutfdanger' of separating the Arrback memberlfrom rthe frame; This 'means `ofsecuring, the prop 5to' the 'back member is' simple, inexpensive' and neat kin appearance, and produces a smooth finish onboth the inner and outer faces of said back member. The prop 10 is stiifened at 16 below the scored line 19, and the porT tion above said slit and line may also be stiffened at 17, Fig. 2, if desired, or said stiffening may be omitted, as suggested at 18 in Fig. 3. When the-stiffening? is ern- V ployed, it makes an extra thickness on the ber and are bent over at 15 so as to lie under the inner covering on theinnersurface of the back member. In this way the hanger is attached to the back member independently of the frame'and may be removed with said back member from the frame. Moreover, only the folded portion of the staple is exposedon the outside of the back member where it presents no objectionable obstruction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a picture frame, of a rigid back member having an inner layer of material thereon and a slit covered layer of material thereonfand a slit'covered` by said inner layer, and a rigid prop pro-V jecting from the outer surface of the back member and having its upper'endportion extending through said slit and concealed between said back member and inner layer. 2.7Thecombination witha p icture frame, of a rigid back member having an inner by said inner layer, and aV rigid prop projecting from-.the outer surface-oir thef'back member and having ayiexible upper end portion extending through saidslit and concealedbetween said Iback member kandinnerv layer.
3. yThe combinationxwith a picture frame,
of rigid 'aback memberihavinganv Iinner layer of vmaterial thereon and al slitcovered by said innerlayer, a .rigid propprojecting from theouter'surface of ythe back member and having its upper end yportion extending through `said slot and Y concealed --between said-back member and innerslayer, a hanger i loop 101i ,the outersurface ofthe, back mem-3 ber, anda staple embracing said loop and having `its :prongs passed through the back member Aand also concealed between itnand the inner layerfabove the upperl extremity ofthe prop.
The combination with al picture iframe having agroove in-its inneredge to receive av glass and'-v picture, -of staples .driven 1 into the inner edge of the frame invsaid groove for retaining said glass and picture in place therein, a back member of rigid material having coverings on its inner and outer sur- Y faces, there being a slit in the back member and'outer covering thereof, a prop having its upper end vportion extending through said slit ,and concealed between the back Y for retaining saidglass andpicture in place therein, a back vmember of rigidmrnaterial having a :covering on `its vinnerV and Vouter surfaces, ythere beinga slit in the-back-mem-- ber and outer covering thereof, a prop having its upper endportion extending through said slit and concealed between the back memberand inner 'covering thereof, and iexible tongues .secured to thereari face ofthe Aframe and adapted to be bent over the edges Vof 4thejfback `memberor -removably securing the same over the groove.
I In testimonywhereof I havef signed ymy name- `to this-specification. i
