Description

J. D. WINGATE.
Depurators for the Teeth and Gums.
No. 135,612. Pat entedFeb'.4,1873.\
WITNESSES; l INVENTOR.
AM. Pm: ra mummy/11c m "Hosea/m3 PRO csss.)
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
JOHN DANIEL WINGATE, OF OARBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEPURATORS FOR THE TEETH AND GUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,612, dated Fcbitery 4, 1813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. WINGATE, of Oar-bondale, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and "aluable Improvement in Local Vacuum Treatment of Diseases of the Gums, Teeth, and Maxillary Bones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification," and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawin g is a representation of my machine ready'for operation. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of my invention.
My invention relates to means for treating the diseases of the gums, teeth, and maxillary bones in a vacuum; and consists in constructing the exhaust-cup hereinafter described and connecting therewith a hose or pipe adapted for attachment to an air-pump, said cup being provided with a nozzle having a soft-rubber lip, as described and claimed.
A of the drawing represents my exhaustcnp, and B the nozzle attached thereto. The letter 0 represents a flexible hose or tube, and D an. air-pump. This hose 0 connects the cup and pump, as shown on the drawing. Upon the mouth of the nozzle B I affix a soft-rubber lip, which entirely encircles the same, and is adapted for conformation to the inequalities of the gums upon which it is designed. to be placed. This lip is marked a on the drawing. So far as my experiments show, the best material for constructing this lip a is soft India rubber, but there are other materials that may be used to advantage; I do not therefiore intend to confine myself to the use of rubber only.
'To apply my apparatus the operator usually seats his patient in a chair, and places the airpump on a contiguous table; he then applies the lip of the nozzle to that part of the gum he desires to treat with one hand, while he actuates the ainpump with the other. By this means all the benefits of treatment in a vacuum are secured to any portion of the gums, however small such portion may be.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- An apparatus for treating the gums, consisting of the cup A, nozzle 13, and soft-rubber lip a, all arranged for connection with an exhaust apparatus, as described.
In testimony that I claim the aboye I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DANIEL \VINGATE.
