UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ARTHUR KAHN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW-JERSEY.
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,883, dated March 24, 1891.
Application filed August 1, 1890. Serial No. 360,637- (No model.) Patented in Germany January 28, 1889, No. 44,951, and in England October 30, 1889,No.15,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ARTHUR KAHN, of Jer sey City, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Massage Apparatus, (for which I have obtained the following patents: England, No. 15,614, dated October 30, 1889, and Germany, No. 44,951, dated January 28, 1889,) of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus to agitate and knead the skin, so as to excite vitality. Hand-massage treatment is expensive, complicated, and frequently unattainable, while my improved apparatus enables patients to operate upon their own bodies, or they may be treated by unskilled help.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 a rear view thereof with the handle removed.
The letter a represents a frame provided at each side with three (more or less) downwardly-depending lugs a a a that constitute the bearings or supports for the implements that agitate the skin. These implements are, first, a smooth soft-rubber roller; secondly, a warty soft-rubber roller, and, thirdly, a metal band. The smooth rubber roller b is mounted upon a shaft 1), journaled in bearings a. The warty rubber roller 0 is mounted upon a shaft 0, journaled in bearings ed. The metal band d is connected to but isolated from the supports 60. Posts (1, in metallic communication with the band and mounted upon the supports a carry the wires (1 of an electric circuit.
The frame a is on top provided with a perforated knob e, through which passes a binding-screw e. A long handle f is passed into the perforated knob and is locked in place by the binding-screw. This handle is employed in self treatment to properly reach all parts of the body;
The apparatus is employed by passing it slowly and evenly over the skin. Reciprocating motion is not desirable. The smooth roller 1) will gently rub or stroke the skin and the warty roller will then knead it. Thus ahealthy agitation is produced. If the patient is to be subjected to an electric treatment, the current is turned into the'band d and the apparatus is passed over the skin the same as before.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of a frame with a smooth roller and a warty roller journaled to the frame, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of frame a, having a knob c, with a smooth soft-rubber roller and a warty soft-rubber roller journaled to the frame, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of frame a with a smooth roller b, a warty roller 0, and a metal band d, carried bythe frame, substantially as specified.
4. The combination offrame a with a smooth roller and a warty roller journaled thereto, and with perforated knob e and handle f, adapted to be locked to the knob, substantially as specified.
ARTHUR KAHN.
