Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @et 12, 192i).
Application filed December 17, 1919. Serial No. 345,551.
To all whom t may cof/warn:
Be it known that l, JOHN D. PEDERSEN, a A
citizen of the United States, residin l1n Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and tate of Wyoming, have invented'certain new an useful improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more especiallyto that class of firearms which is usually designated as small arms, and a principal object of the invention is to vfurnish an improved grip-safety device particularly applicable to auto-loading and automatic-pistols.
One class of small arms to which my pres' ent improvements are applicable, includes the auto-loading pistols having a grip-stock or handle-portion of the frame orreceiver ofthe firearm,
.ya safety device operable by hand grip or plied to pistolwhich is shown 1n the drawings vposition lof safety.
compression. I
An improved auto-loading pistol of-this kind is described in my copending (renewal) application Serial No. 311,689, filed July 17, 1919. Therefore, for convenience of illustration, l have herein shown my present improvements as arranged and apthe particular kind of auto-loadinor I of to which refernce may be said application, had.
rThe features of my grip-safety device are that it is a grip, or handle contained, safety device arranged to prevent discharge of the firearm by locking the firing member or hammer and the triggepsear, when my grip-safety deviceA is in normal position or Also, where the firearm is provided with a sliding breechaction comprising a firingpin to prevent discharge of the firearm by locking the breechaction to prevent' contact between the firing-pin and the cartridge so that action of the firing locking the breechaction on the 'firing-pin will not explodethe cartridge, this being accomplished by a mem'- ber which blocks a shiftablesliding member or controller in position to lock such sliding breechaction when my grip-safety device is in normal position or position of safety,
said blocking member being actuated by a controller being releasable fromposition sion of the grip-operable memberwhichmoves the blocking member so that engage ment of thetrigger member with the sear which is'adapted to receive member or hammer member will move'the Sear member to release the firing member or hammer from movement from firing position to fired position, and at ,the same time shift the slidable member or controller out of locking position into position releasing ,the sliding breechaction and. permitting discharge of the firearm.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my grip-safety larger scale than Fig. 1, of the rear portion of 'a pistol, showing the details, the grip-operable member or grip-safety member thereof being grip-compressed, and the blocking member being moved to position for release of the sliding breechaction of the pistol by movement of the shiftable slidable member or controller due to pressure" of the trigger-member, the firing member or hammer being in firing position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view on sub stantially'the same scale as Fig. 2, showing the details of the rear end of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, the gripoperable member or grip-safety member beingl grip-compressed, and the shiftable slidable ,member or controller being released from the blocking member and moved to release the sliding breechaction of the pistol, andthe Sear member moved to release the firing member or hammer, by pressure on the trigger member, the firing member or hammer being in fired position. y
Fig. 4c is a front end sectionalview, on the line 1 -4: of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the details of the rear end of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, a frontend portion of the grip-stock of the pistol being removed, and the shiftable slidable member or controller being in posltion for locking the vsliding breechaction of the pistol.
Similar reference characters or numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. v
My grip-safety device, generally denoted roo iio
tol and is movable to ated actuator 14m by G, comprises a gri-operable member or grip-safet member The grip-safety member is attached at the lower end thereof by a pivot-pin to the grip-stock of the pistol, the grip-stock of the pistol being bored or otherwise out away at 2B to receive the grip-safety member G. The upper end G2 of thegrip-safety member G is engageable with the frame of the pistol, the grip-safety member G being hand compressible or f yieldable. The grip-safety member G closes the slot or space 2s, which slot or space is of use in assembling the details of my invention. l"
The iirin member or hammer H is pivotally attac ed to the rip-stock of the pisring position and to fired osition. The firing member or hammer H is provided with a firing-notch or cock-notch 8j and with an eccentric cam face 8k.

The blocking member or controller-blocking member 16, is provided at its upper end with an end-face 19 which is enga eable with the end-face or bottom-side 13 o the shiftable slidable member or controller N to retain the shiftable slidable member or controller in upward locking position, and with a recess which affords a rear-face 20 with which said end-point 14 of the shiftable slidable member or controller N is engaofeable to prevent the endface or bottom-side 13 fromslipping outwardly or forwardly out of engagement Vith the end-face 19 of the blocking mem- The rod 21 is pivotally attached at its upperend to the firing member or hammer H, and is pivotally attached at its lower end to the blocking member or controller-blocking member `16, the rod 21 being provided with upper and lower abutments or stopfaces 22 and 23.
The spring 8e surrounds the rod 21,*the spring 8a being seated on the lower abutment or stop-face 23, andat its upper end abutting the upper abutment or stop-face 22, the tendency and purpose of the spring 8e primarily bein -to move the firing member or hammer Hgto fired position.
When the firing member or hammer H is in ring position, a .line from the center of pivotal attachment of the rod 21 to the firing member or hammer through the Vcenter of pivotal attachment of the rod .21 to the blocking member 16, will pass to the rear of the center of pivotal attachment of the grip-operable or grip-safety member G to the grip-stock, the spring 8 thus affording grip-compression of the member G and rethe blockingv the rodv thus to neutralize the reaction or sting of hammer H when actuated by the spring 8e.
The trigger member is movable for-l wardly by means not shown, and by pull thereon is movable rearwardly. rll`he inner end of the trigger member F is attached to the shitable slidable,I member or controller N, by a pivot pin 24, the trigger member being received in the slot 11, and movable upwardly and downwardly therein. The trigger member F is provided with an inclined endace 25, which is engageable when the trigger-member is pulled or moved rearwardly with the end-face 17cl of the sear member S to move the sear member.
The grip-operable member Gf is provided at its upper end with stop means or detent 26, lwhich prevents outward or rearward movement of the member Gr at its upper end, and prevents rearward movement of the blocking member 16, when the grip-operable member is in position of safety, and suitable means 27,. is provided to limit the forward movement of the blocking member 16, when the grip-operable member is gripsafety member compressed. lliroperation, when my grip-safety device is innormal position or positionof safety, the firing member or hammer -H is in firing or cocked position, Fig. 1, and locked in this position by the sear member S, and cooperationtherewith of the lever member n, and actuator ber or controller N being in upward posi- (tion, andso held by the blocking or controller-blocking member 16, and grip-safety member G the end 14 of the shiftable slidable member or controller locking the sliding breechaction of the pistol against movement.
- The She-table slidable member or controller N is moved to this upward position by movement of the firing member or hammer H to iiring or cocked position, the cam face 8k of the ring member or hammer engaging the face 17of the sear memberl S to move the sear member, the lever face 17 of which engages the end of the lever member mythe face of which engages the actuator 14cm, which moves the shiftable slidable memberl or controller N upwardly.:
The end G2 of the grip-operable or grip- G', Fig. 1, is in engagement with the frame of the pistol and is in normal position or position of safety. The face 18 of the blocking member or controller-blockgrip-safety ing member 16 is in engagement with the member Gr', and the end-face 19, of the controller-blocking member 16 is in engagement with the end-face or bottom side of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, thereby lockingthe shiftable slidable member or controller in upward position.
Grip-compression of the grip-safety mem- 14111, the shiftable slidable mem?.-
.ber G', Figs. 2 and 3, disengages the end G2 thereof from the frame of the pistol and moves or rocks the blocking member or controller-blocking member 16, .forwardly so that the end-face 19 thereof is moved forwardly on the end-face or bottom side. 13
of the shiftable slidable member or controller N, but not sufficiently to be entirely out of engagement therewith, the end-face 19, being of suliicient width to contact with the rib 27, of the grip-stock and prevented from further outward movement. Suitable detent means other than the rib 27,'may be provided for this purpose. y
Pull upon the trigger-member F, while the grip-operable or grip-safety member G is grip-compressed, shifts the lower end of the shiftable slidable memberk or controller N inwardly and thereby releases the end-face or bottom-side 13 thereof out of engagement with the end-face 19 of the blocking member 16, and permits downwardi movement of the shiftable slidablemember or controller from locking position, and also, by engagement bf the inclined end-face 25 with the end 17d of the sear member S, moves the sear member to release the firing member or hammer H for movement to fired position.
Movement of thedsear member S also engagesor brings into Contact, by movement of the firing member or hammer H to fired position, the end 17 of the arm S10 thereof with thexupper surface 14e of the shoulder 14 of the shiftable member or controller N, Fig. 3, thus moving the shiftable slidable member or controller downwardly, and thereby releasing the sliding breechaction and permitting discharge of the pistol upon contact of the firing member or hammer with the firing pin of the sliding breechaction. I
