HEAT-CONFINING ATTACHMENT FOR BURNERS.

Be it known that I, Fnnnnnror; W. HANKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heat-confining Attachments for Burners, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein Xplained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
-'The present invention relates to a heatconfining attachment for the burnersof gas or oil stoves, which is adapted to be placed over the burner proper and thereby confine the flame and heated gases in such a. manner that they will be concentrated upon the utensil or other receptacle which is supported by the attachment. A further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable air passage between the depending collar of the attachment and the burner which can be adjusted to accommodate the varying distances which exist between the burner and the top of the stove'in different makes of stoves.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following description setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing I Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing my attachment in position on a stove; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
The attachment consists of a supporting flange 1 of iron or other similar material, and has cast integral therewith a grill 2 corn sisting of radial ribs 3 interconnected by concentric circular ribs & and 5, on which the utensil or receptacle is adapted to rest. The attachment is supported above the burner 6 in the usual recess 7 common to the tops of all stoves and ranges.
Depending from the concentric rib 4 and integral therewith is a downwardly depending flange 8 adapted to encircle the burner 6. This flange is provided with a recess 9 which allows the attachment to fit over the pipe 10 which supplies fuel to the burner,

I have found that a much better combustion of the fuel is obtained if a supplemental supply of air is provided to the flame at or near its point of combustion. This is accomplished by means of a separate cylindrical member or sleeve 11 adapted to frictionally fit the inner surface of the flange 8, and consists of a strip of corrugated spring metal whose ends 12 terminate adjacent the fuel supply pipe 10. This cylindrical sleeve is of sufficient resiliency to be frictionally retained inside of the flange 8 without any other supporting means. By means of this corrugated sleeve air passages 13 are formed whereby columns of air are permitted to enter around the burner and thereby aid in the efficient combustion of the fuel.
The sleeve 11 is made of sufficient depth, and also slidable within the flange 8, so that its lowermost edge will rest on the supporting bar 14 which holds the outer end of the burner 6 in position, thereby forming a cylindrical casing around the burner, extending from the lower edge thereof to the top of the attachment, and open only at the bottom and top. A further object in making the corrugated sleeve 11 slidable is to provide a means for adjustment where the distance between the burner and the stove top varies in different makes of stoves.
In operation the attachment is substituted for the usual grill supplied with stoves, and by means of the depending flange 8 and the sleeve 11 the full effect of the fuel combustion is concentrated on the bottom of the utensil or receptacle being heated. A more efficient combustion of the fuel is also accomplished by means of the air passages 13 formed by the slidable corrugated sleeve 11. The attachment is both simple in operation and construction and is easily adjusted to fit any burner of conventional design.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a heat confining attachment for gas burners, the combination of a supporting flange having concentric ribs supported therefrom, one of such ribs being provided with a downwardly depending flange ed to encircle said gas burner, and a corrugated sleeve vertically adjustable within such downwardly depending flange.
2. In a heat confining attachment for gas burners, the combination of a supporting flange having radial ribs integral ther'e- 'with, such ribs having concentric circular ribs interconnected thereto, one or" such circular ribs being provided with a downwardly depending flange adapted to encircle said gas burner, and a resilient corrugated sleeve adjustably mounted in such flange.
3. In a heat confining attachment for gas burners, the combination of a grill provided with a supporting flange and having a downwardly depending circular flange supported therefrom, a resilient corrugated sleeve vertically adjustable within such downwardly depending flange, such flange and said sleeve being adapted to extend below the upper surface of said gas burner.
4. In a heat confining burners, the combination of a grill provided with a supporting flange and having a downwardly depending circular flange integral therewith, and a resilient corrugated sleeve adapted to form supplemental air passages therewith, vertically adjustable on such downwardly depending flange. f
5. In a'heat confining attachment for gas burners, the combination of a grill pro vided with a supporting flange and having a downwardly depending circular flange integral therewith adapted to encircle said' gas burner, and a resilient corrugated sleeve vertlcally ad ustable in such flange and i the combination of a grill provided attachment for as forming supplemental air passage therewith,

6. In a heat confining attachment for gas burners,the combination of a grill having a downwardly depending flange integral therewith, such flange being adapted to encircle said gas burner, and a corrugated sleeve vertically adjustable within such flange and having frictional engagement therewith, the corrugations of said sleeve forming supplemental air-passages with the inner surface of such downwardly depending flange. 7. In a device of the character described, with a downwardly depending flange adapted to encircle a gas burner, and a removable sleeve frictionally engaging the inner surface of such flange, said inner sleeve having frictional engagement atspaced intervals with such downwardly depending flange.

In a heat confining attachment for burners, the combination of a supper l g flange having concentric ribs suppcrtw therefrom, one of such ribs being provided with a downwardly depending flange adapted to encircle said gas burner, ant, a corrugated sleeve vertically adjustable within such downwardly depending flange, the upper edge of said corrugated sleeve terminating below the'upper edge of such downwardly depending flange.
