OIL-BURNER.
$peo1flcation of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 24, 1912.
Application filed May 13, 1912. Serial No. 696,834.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. PENN, citizen of the United States, residing at Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an oil burner designed for heating purposes, and may be especially used in conjunction with incubators where a steady, white flame heat is desired. mg
The invention consists of the parts a the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 is an exterior view of my burner in partial section. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through the center. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the burner.
My burner consists of three simple castings; a base A, a chimney 2 and a deflector 3. The base is formed with divergent exterior sides and a segmental groove or channel 4 extending around contiguous to the outer periphery of this base. Within the inner edge of this channel is a circular depression into which the metal chimney 2 fits. Within this chimney is a circle of raised cylindrical extensions 5 having central holes extending through them and down to the base of the pan A; these holes serving as draft openings to admit air for the combustion of the li uid fuel. In the center of the pan or base is a depressed cup 6, having a passage 7 from its bottom to the lower part of the base A, and this by means of a coupling 8 and pipe 9 and controlling cock as at 10, receives a supply of oil which may be thus limited at pleasure. Between the raised bosses 5 are channels 11 which incline outwardly and downwardly from the upper edge of the cup 6 to the bottom of the surrounding annular channel 4, previously described.
The operation will then be as follows: Oil being admitted will flow up into the cup gradually filling it and eventually overflowing, running down the inclined channel 11 into the" annular receptacle 4. The height of the raised bosses 5 prevents the oil from running over and down through the air passages. The chimney 2 being in place, the oil in-the channel 4 ma be ignited and its heat will be sufiicient to eat up the chimney 2 to any desired degree; the oil being continuously supplied to the interior cup 6 can then be depended upon to keep the chimney heated and the upward current of heated air causes a draft through the tubes 5 which will sup ly a sufiicient amount of air to make a per ect combustion and a white flame. The table 3 has downwardly projecting legs 12 which are shouldered as shown at 13, so that they may sit upon the upper edge of the chimney 2 and maintain a secure osition thereon.
= In or er to regulate the draft, I have shown a circular plate 14 turnable about the upper end of the elbow 8 and maintained in position by a collar 15. This plate has perforations 5 corresponding with the air tubes in the base, and is also provided with a handle 17 bylwhich it may be readily turned to regulate the size of the air passages to any desired degree. I am thus enabled to furnish a steady heat and perfect combustion which is useful for such purposes as this apparatus is designed for.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An oil burner comprising a base having a circumferential open channel on the top adjacent the outer edge, and having a central interior depression, said base having inclined channels in its top leading from the central depression to said channel, a chimney adapted to fit upon the base between said depression and channel, and an oil supply pipe leading into said depression, said base having regulable air inlet passages opening through it within the interior of the chimney.
2. An oil burning heater consisting of a base having'an annular channel on the top, a central cup with an oil passage leading from below thereto, inclined channels leading from the edge of thecup to the bottom of the surrounding channel, a plurality of vertical air passages leading upwardly around the cup having their upper ends raised above the cup level, a chimney, an annular rim within which the chimney fits between the central cup and the annular channel, a damper having holes corresponding with the air inlet passages, and a handle by which the damper may be turned to regulate the air inlet openings.
3. An oil burning and heating device comprising a metal base having a central cup at the top, means for supplyingoil thereto from below, said base having an annular channel in its top adjacent the outer edge, a chimney removablyfitting upon the top of the base bet-ween said channel and central cup, said base having its top provided with inclined radial channels leading from the edge of the central cup and discharging into said'channel, said base having air channels formed through it and means for controlling the air supply, a separable deflecting table having rigid legs projecting from its under surface, said legs having shoulders adapted to rest upon the top of the chimney and support the table above the upper edge .15
