HAT-RETAINING- DEVICE.

Be it known that I, lVILLIAM R. DALES, a citizen of the United States residing at Philadelphia, in the county of lhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat retaining devices employing a spring retaining member between the body of the hat and the sweat band for the purpose of holding the hat upon the head of the wearer thereof against the action of the wind and other forces tending to displace it.
The object of my present invention is to improve the efficiency of devices of this character, to provide a novel construction which may be used effectually in both. soft and stiff hats, and to provide a novel means for retaining the device in proper working relation to the parts of the hat.
Vith the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the body of a hat and 3 the sweat band which extends around the inside of the hat body and has its lower edge portion attached to the bottom thereof by sewing or otherwise in the usual well known manner.
The retaining device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is placed within the hat 2 between the forward part of the hat body and the adjacent part of the sweat band 3, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and it comprises a bearing member 4 and a retaining member or device 6.
The bearing member 4 is formed of suitable metal and it comprises a long fiat body portion 7 and retaining parts or tongues 8 formed on the top of the respective ends thereof and bent to extend inwardly and Specification of Letters Patent.

downwardly therefrom so as to occupy positions parallel with but slightly spaced from the body portion 7, as shown in the drawings. The body portion 7 is shaped to conform to and fit against the inside of the forward part of the hat body 2 and it is attached thereto by means of stitches 9 sewed through the hat body and through holes or openings 10 in the member 4.
The retaining device 6 is inserted between the body 7 of the bearing member 4 and the sweat band 3 and it is preferably formed of spring brass and comprises end members or arms 11 and an intermediate member 12 which connects the arms 11. The arms 11 are inserted between the body 7 of the member 4 and its retaining parts 8, and the retaining parts 8 are provided with indentations 13 which extend into the space between the parts 8 and the body 7 of the member 4 and prevent accidental endwise displacement of the device 6 relatively to the bearing member 4.
The retaining device 6 has spaced bearing parts 14 and an intermediate bearing part 15. The spaced bearing parts 14 are adapted to engage the bearing member 4, and the intermediate bearing part 15 is adapted to engage the sweat band 3, and hold it normally spaced from the bearing member 4 and the hat body 2, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The arms 11 may rest in slidable contact with the body 7 of the bearing member 4 or its retaining parts 8 or both; and the arms 11 are free to slide toward and from each other between the body 7 and parts 8 as the central part 12 of the retaining device 6 is sprung toward and from the central portion of the bearing member 4.
In assembling the parts, the bearing member 4 is first sewed to the hat body 2 in the position shown in the drawings, the forward portion of the sweat hand 3 is then turned down from within the hat body and the arms 11 of the retaining device 6 are slipped up into place between the body 7 of the bearing member 4 and its retaining parts 8, in the position shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, and thereafter the sweat band 3 is turned back into the position shown in the hat. In this position of the parts, the upper ends of the retaining arms 11 prevent accidental upward displacement and the sweat band 3 prevents accidental downward displacement of the retaining device 6 from 1ts position ad acent to the bearing member 4; and between the sweat band 3 and the body of the hat 2, leaving the retaining device 6 free to slide against the bearing member 4- as the central portion of the retaining device is sprung toward and from the forward portion of the hat body.

The combination with a hat body hav ing a sweat band attached thereto, of a bearing member secured to the hat body between it and the sweat band, a spring retaining device between the body of the hat and the sweat band and having two spaced bearing parts slidably engaging the bearing member and an intermediate part spaced from the body of the hat and the bearing member and engaging the sweat band, and means to prevent vertical displacement of said device relatively to the bearing member.

The combination with a hat body having a sweat band attached thereto, of a bearing member secured to the hat body between it and the sweat band, a spring retaining de-, vice between the body of the hatand the sweat band and having two spaced bearing parts slidably engaging the bearing member and an intermediate part spaced from the body of the hat and the bearing member and engaging the sweat band,means to prevent endwise displacement of said device from its operative relation to the bearing member, and means to prevent vertical displacement of said device relatively to the bearing member.
