Description
J. POWELS.
FORM RETAINER FOR HATS.
APPLICATION HLED APR.4. 1921.
1,419,517., Patented June 13,1922,
77v i0 Z8 Z Jam? Paww INVENTOR BY ATTO UNHTEED JOHN POWELS, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
FORM RETAINER FOB HATS.
Application filed April 4, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Fownns, a subject of the King of Belgium, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Form Retainers for Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to apparel apparatus, and has for an object to provide a device for insertion in a soft hat folded to the fedora type to support the front and back portions of the crown to prevent creasing and generally to retain the form and shape of the hat and prevent distortion.
In addition to the foregoing this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a hat embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a view in section of the hat, and
Figure 3 is a view of the device.
With reference to the drawings, 10 indi-- cates the crown of a soft hat. 11 the brim and 12 the sweat band upon the inside. In the form illustrated in the drawings, the crown is creased at 13 to form the fedora type. I provide a pair of devices, one of which is shown in Figure 3, within the hat atthe front and back. Each device consists of a substantially triangular piece of metal, the base line 14 of which is straight, and the two other sides 15 and 16 curved inward as shown. The apex or corner opposite the side 14 terminates in two semicircular rounded portions 17 and 18 with a notch 19 therebetween. Fnich portion 17 and 18 is furthermore formed with an integral spur 20. A pair of fastening devices is mounted on the device and consists preferably of pins 21 having their head ends curved and inserted in openings in the device, small portions of solder being sub- Specification of Letters Eatent.

sequently applied to the heads to hold the pins against movement. The pins are parallel and extend toward the side 14;.
In use a p ii" of these devices is employed, one at the front and one at the back, each having its edge 14 inserted. between the sweat band and crown of the hat and the pins 21 inserted in the material of the crown as shown in Figure The creased portion of the crown will rest in the notch 19 of the device and the front and back walls of the crown will thus be supported and the unsightly creasing of these walls which occurs after the hat is worn for some time is prevented. The device should be curved by the user to conform to the curvz'tture of the crown. Owing to the provision of the pins $21 the device may be used in hats of varying heights of crown since the device is sup ported upon the pins and the object is to bring the upper end of the device as far as possible to the top edge of the crown. The portions 17 and 18 may be bent inward slightly thereby engaging the creased portion 13 of the crownv therebetween to hold the crease. Other uses and advantages will readily occur to those familiar with the art to which this invention appertains.
While I have illustrated and desxribed my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A device of the class described compris ing a substantially triangular piece of rigid material having a notch in one corner defin ing a pair of spaced extensions, pins secured on one face of the material for attaching the device to the crown and spurs formed on each of the spaced extensions for securing the apex of the device to the creased portion of the crown of a hat.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature.-
' JOHN Pownris. [ns]
