UNITED STATT-:s PATENT/OFFICE..
ALBERT W. CONNOR, OE COVINGTON, KENTUCKY, AND GEORGE I. ANDERsON, OE CIN- CINNATI, OHIO, AssIGNORs To THE CINCINNATI AUTO SPECIALTY CO., or OIN- CINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OE OHIO.
RADIATOR-COVER.
Specification of Letter-s Patent.
Patented 0015.5, 1920.
Application led April 30, 1918. Serial No. 281,707.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT W. CONNOR, a citizen of the .United States, and residin at Covington, in the county of Kenton an State of Kentucky, and GEORGE D. ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented :a new and useful Improvement in Radiator-Covers, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
Our invention relates to a cover for an automobile radiator hood.
The object of the invention is to produce a relatively inexpensive, one-piece cover, conveniently applied or removed, and affording eicient weather protection.
The material is of any approved waterproof fabric, made of double-ply, suitably interlined and stitched.
The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the cover.
Fig. 2 is a front view, showing the cover applied.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the One-piece outline and cutting.
The cover is originally out out of a blank in the contour shown in Fig. 3, having the major shield-shape portion 1, and the upper extension portion 2, the opposite side edges 3, of which diverge from the rounded edges 4 of portion 1, and portion 2 has the rounded extremity 5. Y
The medial lower portion of member 1 is cut out to form the opening 6 to accommodate for the overlap of the radiator-opening curtain 7, which is provided by the slits 8, running down convergingly from the covers 9, defining the division between portions 1 and 2. These converging slits 8 run down to the cut-out portion 6 and form the said curtain 7, and, of course, formed in a single cutting Operation.
The upper portion of this one-piece member 1, 2, is folded upon itself, that is, member 2 is dropped down upon member 1, till the corner points 10, of member 2, overlap member 1, the entire cover having now the shield-shape shown in Fig. 1, and the curtain 7 completely covers the radiator-hood opening area, and the lmarginal edges 3 of the curtain 7, Overlap the margins of the portion l, covering the radiator Ventilating openlng, defined by dotted` lines 13, Fig. 1, and secured at the bottom by snap 14.
The parts are stitched on the line'where the points l() of member 2 overlap member 1, thus definin the line of curtain securance, indicated by otted line 15, Fig. 1.
The cover is provided with the belt 16 on its underside for strapping over the waternozzle of the radiator-hood.
The portion of the cover shown covers the radiator-hood front, and to the margins of this is secured a perpendicular Hap to overlap the top and sides of the radiatorhood, constituting the usual hood-structure.
The material as well as the operations are economical, the structure simplified, and a very warm, snug, durable and convenient cover is thus provided.
Having described the claim 1. The herein described method of forming a radiator front covering, comprising a body portion, having a central opening and a curtain portion for the body opening, consisting in cutting said members from an integral blank, by cutting the blank inwardly from opposite sides toward one end along lines joining and representing three sides of an isosceles trapezoid, dividinvention, we
ing the blank into a body member having a central cut-out opening and a vcurtain member corresponding to the outline of the body Openin reducing the length of said curtain mem er and securing the members together with the curtain ed es overlapping the opening edges of the boy.
2. The herein described method of forming a radiator front covering comprising a body portion having a central opening and a curtain portion for the body opening consisting in cutting said members from an integral blank by cutting the blank inwardly from opposite sides toward one end along lines joining and representing three sides of an isosceles trapezoid, dividing the blank into a body member having a central cutout opening and a curtain member correspondingwto the outline of the body opening, and securing the members together with the curtain edges overlapping the opening edges of the body.
3. The herein described method of forming a radiator front covering comprising a body portion having a central opening and a curtain portion 'for the body opening consisting in cuttin said, members from an integral blank o suitable outline, cutting the blank along lines dividing the blank into a body member. having a central cut-out opening and a curtain member corresponding to the outline of the body opening, and securing the members to ether with the curtain edges overlapping t e'opening edges .of A
the body.
4. In a radiator covering comprising a body member having a central opening, and
a cover member for said opening similar inv outline 'to -the opening, sald cover member cut from a single blank member,' the cover member representing the material cut to provide the central o ning of the body member and of reduce len h and secured to saidopenin end of sai body with its `Edges overlapplng the opening edges of the In witness whereof, We hereunto subscribe our names, as attested by the two subscrib- 25 ving witnesses.
