Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application filed November 22, 1917. Serial No. 203,392.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLrH OLnvIN, a citizen of the United States, residin at De troit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks for Letter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to improvements in combination locks for letter boxes and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby the door of the letter box may be locked and unlocked without the use of a key.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a combination lock for letter boxes of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 7
For a complete understanding of -my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which? 7 Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combination lock for letter boxes constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same, 7 r
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the letter box clearly illustrating the con struction of the same and the application of the lock to the door thereof,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the lock.
Referring in detail to the drawings the numeral'l indicates a letter box having a door 3 secured thereto by hinges 4 and said door 3 is provided with an ofiset that has a depression 20 to receive a dial plate 21. The side wall of the depression 20 and the face of the dial plate 21 are inclined as clearly shown in Fig. 2, whereby'the dial plate 21 is capable of rotating within the depression 20 and still be retained therein. The outer shank 23, in which is mounted, a "stem 24.
The stem 24 has formed upon itsouter end, a head 25, which is received by a head 26 26 is provided with a milled or knurled face for the purpose of rotating the stem 24. Thehead 25 is permanently secured to the head 26. The stem 24 extends through the dial plate 21 and depression 20 and has mounted upon its inner end, a plate 27, on which are formed, a plurality of fingers 28.
formed upon the hollow shank 23. The head 8 Aiinger 29 of the series of'fingers 28 is of 1 v a greater length than the others, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4.
. The plate 27 is removably secured to the stem 24 by means of a screw 21 so that the location of the fingers 28 and 29 may be varied for the purpose of changing the combination of the lock.
A locking plate 28 is slidably secured to the door 3 by means of pins 29 that extend through slots formed in said plate and. the plate 28 is provided with an opening 30 for 7 receiving the plate 27.
A dog 31 is pivoted to the locking plate 28 and has a substantiallyV-shaped portion'in which is positioned one end of a leaf spring as at 32. The leaf spring 32 passes about a pin 33 carried bythe locking plate 28 and has its free end within the recess 34 formed within the locking plate.
A beveled projection 35 is formed upon the pressure on the spring at the point illustrated by the character 32 and'said spring then limits the movement of said dog causing the plate 28 to move rearwardly disengaging the projection 35 from the stop 18 that is formed on the box which frees the door, permitting said door to be opened. During the rotation of the dial or plate to aline the proper characters, the fingers 28 barely engage the dog 31 causing a clicking sound and permits a person to more readily turn the plate 27 slowly.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is: I
A lock including a. door having a dial rotatably secured thereto, a plate slidably secured to said door and havingan opening therein, a keeper engaging projection formed on said plate, a shank secured to said dial and extending through the opening, a
dog pivoted to said plate and having one end disposed over said opening and having its other end of V-shape formation, atension member secured to the plate and consisting of a pair of arms, one of said arms being disposed against one end of the plate and the other arm having its ends bent into substantially V-shape formation and disposed Within the V-shaped end of the dog for limiting the pivotal movement of said dog, an actuat ng member secured to said shank, and a plurality of radially extending fingers formed on said actuating member and adapted to engage the first named end of the dog, and one of said fingers being of a greater length than the other fingers for re tracting the plate on rotation of the dial.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
