One end wall of the latter is provided with an opening in which slides a bolt 16, Figures 8 and 1 which is guided by the sides of the said opening and is bifurcated at its other end within the casing as at 17 to slidably engage a post 18 on thecasing. The bolt is thus supported andguided at both ends and also carries a lug 19 for engagement with a stop 20 on the casing to limit the outward movement of thebolt, the inner movement of the same beingvlilnitcd by d sengagement oiiits end with the casing.
Thenileans for sliding the bolt comprises ln'ei erably a notch or recess 21 in its lower side with which engages an arm 22 on a rotatable element or barrel 23 extending trans .versely through the casing and supported by its front and rearwalls. The meansrtor turning the barrel coro- PILSBSI an OPQTIll'lg Or keyhole 29 extending inwardly from its forward end and adapted to receive a key 30, The movement of the barrel and of the bolt is controlled, as usual in this type of lock, by a fence 31, in the present instance carried by the bolt, and cooperating with a set of tumblers each pivotally supported at one end on post l8 and formed at its opposite end with a slot 33 to receive the fence. The slots 33 of the different tumblers of which, in the present instance, there are six, are located at different distances from the lower sides of the respective tumblers, according to the particular system of the lock, and as well understood in the art, the tumblers must be so adjusted as to bring the slots 33 of all of them into registry with fence 31 before the bolt can be retracted. The tumblers are ad justed in this manner by key means inserted in the barrel and are normally urged toward the latter for cooperation with such key means by a leaf spring 3 f carried by each tumbler and bearing at its opposite end against a lug on the casing.
The key means for adjusting the tumblers comprises the key 30 referredto above as adapted-for insertion in the opening or keyhole 29 in the forward end of the barrel, and
.alsoa hole 35 extending inwardly of the barrel from its rear end and receiving a part or .key loit 36 adapted to be inserted at the rear side of the lock. The keyholes 29 and 35 are so arranged relative to each other as to bring the key 30 and key bit 36 when inserted in the lock side by side with their tumbler actuating portions under the set of tumblers. Key bit 36 as shown in Figure 5 has a blank portion 37 arranged to engage a flange 38 on the barrel to limit its movement inwardly of the look so that while readily inserted in and removed from the lock at the rear side of the latter with the bolt extended, the key bit cannot be removed or gotten at from the forward or front side of the lock.
The key bit 36 and the bit of key 30 have their tumbler actuating parts constructed in a complementary manner, the one adapted to actuate one or more, but not all of the tumblers, and the other to actuate those tumblers not actuated by the first. In the particular instance shown, key 30 is adapted to actuate the first, t d, fourth and sixth tumblers in order from the rear side of the lock, while the bit 36 is adapted to actuate the second and fifth tumblers. Thus neither the key, 30 nor bit 36 can be used separately to operate the look, but when used together they are adapted to raise all of the tumblers so'as to bring their slots 33 in registry with the; fence and permit the bolt to be withremoved after such use. The key bit 36 on the other hand is adapted to be inserted in the lock at its rear side when the closure is open and to be left in the lock to maintain the latter responsive at all times to the cover plate 39 for the kevholc 35, pivotally supported at 40 and. adapted alter the hey bit has been inserted in the barrel to be snapped back to the position shown in Figure 2 to hold the key bit in place. Also, a small opening 41 is preferably formed in the end of the key bit adjacent the rear end of the barrel so that any small hooked implement may be inserted through the space provided by the adjacent keyhole 29 and into open ing 41 for withdrawing the key bit from the barrel after the keeper plate 39 has been moved to one side.
It is apparent that a large number of complementary pairs of portable keys and key bits similar to the pair described above may be constructed and each pair employed in the complementary manner described for operating the look but the lock is responsive, of course, only to a portable key complementary to the particular key bit inserted in t r the lock so that the key bit employed at any time may be removed and replaced by a different one, thus rendering the portable key previously used with the lock inoperative. This substitution of one key bit for another, moreover, is readily affected by anyone without removing the lock, requiring no special knowledge or skill.
As apparent from the description and drawing the construction is exceedingly simple, reliable and inexpensive to manufacture, and provides a lock having a wide range of utility. Thus a series 0 t duplicate locks may be used each having the same key bit 36 inserted therein and operated by duplicate keys, and periodically or whenever desired a new key bit may be easily substituted in each lock thus rendering the portable key previously used useless and requiring a new portable key complementary to the new key bit for actuation of the lock. Or, a series of locks may be employed, as for instance in a security vault, each having a different key bit inserted therein and operable by a different portable key. By vary ing the tumbler construction, of course, the same key blt may be employed for use with a number of different portable keys. Should the key of a given lock become lost, a new key bit may be obtained and readily substituted in the lock for the old one, thus rendering the lock inoperative by the previous key and responsive only to a new portable key corresponding to the new key bit in the lock. A look comprising a bolt, a plurality of tumblers, an element for moving the bolt under control of the tumblers, a part corresponding to certain of the tumblers applicable to said element on one side of the lock, and a complementary key corresponding to the remainder'of the tumblers applicable to said element on the other side i of the lock for moving the same, adjusting said tumblers and moving the bolt.

A look comprising a bolt, a plurality oftumblers, an element for moving the bolt under control or. the tumblers having openings therein communicating With opposite sides of the look, a part corresponding to certain of the tumblers adapted lor msertion in an opening of said element on one side of the lock, and a key corresponding to others of the tumblers adapted for insertion in the opening of said element on the other side oi? the lock for moving said ele- ,ment and part, adjusting all of said tum blers and moving the bolt.
