new and useful Improvements in Sun-IIats,'
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates lto improvements in garments and more particularly to a head gear especially adapted for use as a sun hat.
An important object of this invention is to provide a sun hat in which the crown and the brim is formed from a single sheet of fabric whereby the hat may be expeditiously and cheaply manufactured.
A further object of the invention is toy provide a hat of the class described having self-adjusting means whereby the hat may be applied to heads of various shapes and sizes.
A further object of theinvention is to provide a hat ofthe character described which is durable, neat in appearance and desirable in use. l
A further object of the invention is to provide a hat having its brim retained in position by a bracing wire which may be quickly and conveniently removed when it isy desired to wash the hat or for other purpose. 'Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application. and in which like numerals are employed to designate likev parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a hat embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the couplingmember.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates generallya section of cloth which in this case is round. At a point spaced iny wardly from the edge of the cloth 10 an elongated strip 11 of a suitable fabric is stitched in annular formation, as indicated at 12, to the section 10. 'Ihe strip 11 servesV to secure an elastic strip 13 in position and divides the section 10 into an annular brim 1/1 and a crown 15. As illustrated in Fig. 1,
the elastic strip 13 has its ends connected and serves to contract the -inner portion of the brim to such an extent that a plurality ofradial plaits 15 are provided.
A second strip 16'is secured in annular formation to the edge portion of the brim 14 and has its edges secured to the adjacent portions of the brim. Thestrp 16 receives Y connected by a coupling device generally.V
designated by thenumeral 18 and b y reason of the coupling 18 the ends of the wire may be readily separated for entirely removing the wire.
The coupling 18 includes a sleeve 19 adapted for the reception of a solidsection 20 carried by the other end of the wire, The section 2O is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 21 for'the reception of an elongated spring tongue 22. The forward portion of the tongue 22 is crimped transversely to provide a locking shoulder 23 adapted to seat within a locking notch or depression 24 in the bottom wallk of the recess 21 when the section 2O is inserted within the sleeve. When it is desired to remove the shoulder 23 from the notch 24.-, an upstanding manipulating nger 25 formed on the'forward end Vof the tongue 22 is elevated and the section 20 may be readily withdrawn.
As illustrated in F ig. 1 a suitable ornamental trimming 26 maybe stitched to the under sideof the brim;V
In the practice of my invention, the elastic strip v13 enablesy the hat to be conveniently applied to heads of various shapes and sizes and to snugly fit the same. rlhe elastic strip also serves to vdivide the section Y 13 into a crown and a brim.
When it is desired to-remove the vwire 17 for the purpose of washing the hat, the male member 2O of the coupling 18 may be readily withdrawn Vfrom the sleeve 19 and one end of the wirepassed out through a suitable opening along'one edge of the strip 16. The opening along onev edge of the strip 16 may. be provided by removing a fewi'of the brim.
.stitches which secure the strip 16 to the While I have shown and described the` rangement and construction of pares may be made as will remain within the spirit` orn the invention and the scope of what is claimed. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hat including a single piece of cloth7 a strip stitched in annular` formation beneath said piece of cloth at a point spaced from' its edge, an elastic band conined between 10 ysaid strip and said piece of cloth for dividing the piece of cloh into a crown vand aV a second strip securedV in annular formation to the edge portion of said brim, and a stiening wire secured between said second named strip and the adjacent portion of said brim. Y
In testimony whereof aHiX my signature,
MRS. ROSA I. lSAWIERFIFLI). i [L S.]
