Description

Patented 1an. 28, 1873.
S. BERRY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL BERRY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,261, dated January 28, 1873.
lo all lwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SAMUEL BERRY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved machine taken through the line wat, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the cover being turned back and the brush removed.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in oo nstruction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them. The invention consists in the circular brush provided with a vertical shaft and lever-handle, in combination with a wash-tub provided with a corrugated bottom and close-fitting cover, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a tub., which may be an ordinary Wash-tub, or a tub made expressly for this purpose. The tub A is provided with a corrugated bottom, B, which I prefer to make in sectors, each sector being corrugated parallel with its axis. The tub A is provided with a closely-fitting cover, C, which is made in two halves, which are hinged to the edge of the tub A, so that they may be turned back, as shown in Fig. 2, for convenience in putting in and taking out the clothes. D is a circular brush, made of such a size as to lit loosely into the tub A. To the center of the back of the brush D is securely attached the lower end of a vertical shaft, E, which passes up through a hole in the center of the cover (l,
and to its upper end is attached a lever-handle, F, which may be made of any convenient length. The cover C is held down to its place yby a bar, G, through a hole in the center ot' up over the ends of the said bar Gr.
In using the machine the clothes vkto be washed are placed upon the corrugated bottom B, the brush D is placed upon them, and the cover C is secured in place. The operator then takes hold of the ends of thelever-handle F, and, by operating said handle, turns the brush D back andforth upon the clothes, washing them thoroughly in a very short time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The corrugated bottom B, combined with a circular brush, C, operated in a close box, A G, as and for the purpose described.
SAM. BERRY.
