To all whom it may concern.
Beit known that we, JOEL W. JoIrNsoN and ALsnR'r J. CARPENTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and gtate of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specifica'tion. p
- This invention'relates to ne w and useful improvements in faucets and the principal object of the invention isto provide locking means for the faucet to prevent the same from being opened by an unauthorizede person.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the parts will be automatically locked when the faucet is closed and also to provide a key for actuating the lock with means for preventing the insertion of the key when the faucet is open.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. r
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of the invention.

In these views 1 indicates the body of the faucet provided with the outlet spout 2 and an inlet 3. The interior of the body is provided with a cross partition 4 provided with an outlet hole 5 and with a lock receiving chamber 6. 7 is a valve plate provided with a plurality of openings, 7 adapted to coincide with the outlet opening 5 when said valve is in open position. This plate is also provided with a square central hole 7*. This valve plate rests against the outer side of the cross partition 1. 8 is the stem of pSpec ification of Letters Patent. This inner end of the stem is provided withv a square part 9 which fits in the square recess .7" in the valve plate and said'square part has a screw threaded extension 10 for receiving. a nut '11 which secures the valve plate on said stem. The reduced part of the chamber receives suitable packing material 12 which 7 is covered by a fiat ring 13 and a coiled spring 1 1 surrounding the reduced part of the stem engages with said plate for holding the valve plate tightlyagainst the partition. A shaft 15 has its end screw threaded into the reduced part of the stem with its outer end extending into the bore of the enlarged I part of said stem. This shaft receives a toothed wheel 16 which has its outer end pro vided with key engaging slots 17. 18 represents a pair of lock-bolts havingteeth on their inner ends which engage'the teeth on the wheel 16. These bolts are placed on opposite sides of the wheel so that both will be retracted on the rotation of said wheel. The bolts are normally held in extended position by springs 19. The ends of the bolts pass through suitable openings in the stem 8. 20 indicates bolt receiving openings diametrically arranged in the wall of the chamber 6. These openings are so arranged that the springs will force the bolts into them when the faucet is closed. The stem of the faucet is provided with a suitable handle 21; 22 indicates a key suitably shaped to engage the wheel 16 for withdrawing the bolts. This' key may be provided with any suitable means, such as the barrel 16, for preventing its insertion into the look when the faucet is open. Such means will also prevent the use of a key not intended to be used with the look. We cover the end of the look by a lid 28, suitably hinged to the end of the faucet and adapted to be closed by a set screw 24. I
We prefer to make the end 3 detachable so that the valve plate may be removed and inserted in this end. It will be seen that the parts of the lock cannot be tampered with nor removed from the faucet without first detaching the faucet from the pipe and re moving the nut 11.
As before stated the springs will force the locking. bolts into their recesses as soon as the handle of the faucet is moved to closed position so that the faucet cannot be opened without the use of the key. Whenthe key is inserted and turned the wheel 16 will be' rotated and thus the lockingbolts will be withdrawn from the recesses so that the faucet may be opened.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel featuresof our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement .of the several parts,provided' that such changes fall within the scopeof the appended claims.
