To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I. ALEXANDER ENOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anchorage, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which` the iollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to permutation padlocks and the principal object of the invention is to provide a lock of this type which is formed without the use of bolts or springs and is also keyless.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plurality of independent locking members, with means carried by each member for permitting a plurality of adjustments of the locking position thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for .preventing a person from discovering the unlocking combination while the parts are in unlocked position.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reterence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention;

In these views 1 indicates the base of the device which is of cylindrical form and is formed integral with the cylindrical stem 2 which forms the center of the lock. This stem is provided with the longitudinally extending slots 3 which are diametrically arranged, as shown. These slots communicate with the recesses 4: which are formed on the inner face of the member 1. The casing of the lock is formed of the ring members o. These members surround the stem 2 and are seated oneupon the other with the lowermost one seated upon the member 1. The interior diameters of these ring members are of greater dimensions than the diameter of the stem so that the ring members are spaced from the stem and this space is occupied by the segmental members 6, a pair of .which is carried by each ring member. These segmental members are of such a form that spaces 7 will be left between the ends of the members of each pair when said members are in engagement with the stem and these spaces are adapted to receive the legs 8 orn the shackle 9. The segmental members 6 are of but half the thickness of the ring members 5 and these parts are heldtogether by means of the projections 10 and grooves 11 on the segmental members engaging the grooves 12 and projections 13 on the ring members. As shown, the segmental members are in engagement with the lower parts of the ring members so that an annular groove is left between the dierent pairs of segmental members, the outer wall of each groove being formed by the upper portion of the ring member. The upper ring member 14: is provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 15 at its upper part which is screw-threaded to engage a screwthreaded upper end of the stem 2. In this way the different parts forming the casing, are held in-assembled position. This upper ring member 14 is so formed as to provide the annular groove 16 and this upper ring is not provided with the segmental members which are carried by the other rings. The legs 8 of the shackle 9 have their outer edges provided with the notches 17 fand these notches are adapted to receive the inwardly extending portions of the segmental members to securely hold the shackle within the casing. The lugs 18 formed by said notches 17 will t in the annular grooves formed by said segmental members.
When the parts are in a position with the spaces 7 between the segmental members in alinement and opposite the grooves 3 in the stem, the legs of the shackle are free to pass into or out of the casing as the segmental members are not in engagement with the notches 17 in the shackle, but as soon as one or more of the rings are turned to place the segmental members in engagement with the notches, the shackle is securely held in the casing and cannot be withdrawn until the parts are so turned that the spaces 7 are inv alinement with the grooves 3. The outer peripheries of the ring members and base are provided with suitable indicia to indicate the positions of the interior parts of the device so that a person knowing the proper combination would turn the ring members to a position which will free vthe shackle and permit the withdrawal oi' the same. It will be seen that this combination may be changed whenever desired b`y adjusting the segmental members 6 in their ring members so as to change the position of the spaces 7 relative to the numerals on the outer circumference of the ring members.
In order to prevent a person Afrom securing the proper combination when the shackle is withdrawn, I provide a washer 19 which is adapted to be placed beneath the outermost ring and the next ring. This washer is provided with the inwardly extending lugs Q0 which are adapted to cover the shackle reeeivng openings and thus prevent a person from looking through said openings and thus turning the rings until the spaces are in alinement thereby securing the opening combination. This Washer is placed in position by unscrewing the upper ring member, placing the washer over the second member and then replacing the rst member. This washer is only used when the parts are left in exposed positions with the shackle withdrawn and where they may be tampered with.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with- 1 in the scope of the appended claim.
Vihat I claim is:
A device of the class described comprising a casing, a plurality of rings forming portions of the casing, a removable shackle having notches therein, projections on the rings adapted to engage said notches, a washer having projections thereon for closing the casing when the shackle is withdrawn therefrom and means for detachably holding said washer in position.
