UNITED, s'rA'rEs PATENT orifice rEnMnTATIoN PADnoCK.
Be it known that I, l-lnNRY C), NinnsnN, a citizen of the United States, residingg at Tremonton, `in the county `oli i Boxtel-der, State of Utah, havewinvented certain new and useful mproveme'nts inPerinutation Padlocks; and l `do herebydeclare the fol` lowing to bea full,l clear, and enact de-, script-ion of theinvention, such as.\vill-en able others skilled in the' art 'to ..\vhich `it appertains togniake and use thelisanie. This invention relates :to new and use ful improvements in locks andwparticularly tovopermu-tation padlocks. fOne object of Vthe invention is toiprogvide a permutation lock wherein. vthe tuinblers areso formed that the feel r'and sound, Whether the tumblers are inLlocl; ing or unlocking position, ivill be the saline, thereby preventing the unauthorized ropening of the lock bytapping or trialturns of the tumblers. l Another object is to provide a ypermutation lock wherein there is provideda fre- Inovable cap or cover Vfor the body offthe lock which can only `be turned for removal when the shackle'of thelock is in unlockedand withdrawn position. y .Y
further object .is yto provide va permutation lockoi the padlock type wherein the detent, which holds thewsha'ckle Within the body of the lock, is inaintainedin locking position, and is so constructed and posi, tioned that the shackle may be readily and easily slipped into the body and automatically engaged with the detent, Whether the tuinblers are Vin unlocked orlocledposi? tion. a
Other objects and advantages will` be ap.-4v parent from thefollowing descriptionwvhen taken inconnection with. the accompanying drawing. Y i

Figure l is aside elevation of a permutation padlock `madein accordance vvitni-the invention. n
Figure `2 is a vfertic'all sectional view through the lock, in locked position.
Figure 3 is a vertical 4sectional View through the lock in unlocked position, the shackle being shown as Withdrawn.

while theilatter or shorter leg is disposed in the shorter bore 19; The inner end of the leg 27 is formed` with a head 29 which is adaptedto engage with'a lug or projection 30, on the lower portion of the detent, whereby to prevent the completey withdrawal of the shackle when in unlocked position, as shown i-n -Figure 3.V The inner end ofl the shorter leg4 28 is formed with a notch 31, which receivesthe nose of the horizontal leg of the detent 2li.V The side of the inner end of the leg 28v is beveled, as shown at 32, and the said horizontal leg of the detent is flexible, whereby, when the shackle is pushed into flex thesaid legof .the de'tent to one side, thereby not causing any sliding movement of the detent toward the grooves of the tumblerV rings. The upper wall of thenotch'l is beveled and rests on the beveled f-facel oit-the 7 nose of the' detent", whereby when'theproper 40y the beveled face of the nose andi-cause the ,deeper notches 16 are in alignment, and an outward pull is exerted on the shackle, the said beveled wall of the notch will ride on detent to slide over'and dispose its vertical leg within the said' aligned notches 16.` Immediately that the shorter leg of the shackle is withdrawn from the body of the lock, the spring 21 returns the detent'into its normal Y locking position, that isV withits nose within the shorten bore, Vready for flexing by the shorter leg'28 of the shackle. As soon as the shorterleg'ofthe shackle passed into the bore 19, to such a distance that the notch 31 is oppositethe nose of the detent, the horirlontalleg of the detent immediately springs over to engage/the nose in the said' notch.
V,By'reasonot` the flexibility ofthe horizon# leg .ofthe detent, the shackle can be pushed into the body of theflock, whether th'eideeper `notches of thetumbler rings are in4 alignmentVV or not,` thus vrendering the proper'engagement of the shacklebythe de-V tent, thus-obvi'ating the'necessity of holding the shackle in position while the tumbler ringsV are rotated'intolocking position. Y
. Attention is also directed to the recess in the removable cap into which theupper end lof the Ylonger leg olf the-shackle engages, when the shackle is in lockedposition. i It will be noted that the cap cannotbe rotated,
for rem'ovahwhile the lock is locked, it being necessary to unlock the device, withdraw the shackle, beforethe cap will befree to rotate. Y f
