OSCAR A. ACKERMANN, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
STOCK-GAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17 1920.
Application filed January 28, 1919. Serial No. 273,682.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Oscan A. AomcnMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at b't. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of hlinnesota, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Stock-Cars, of which the following is a specification. 1
The object of this invention is to provide a. cover on the sides of stock cars which will protect the stock without overheating and without obstructlng deslrable ventilation;
transit and during sudden changes of the weather, thus protecting the stock in the best possible manner.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a stock car embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of one of the curtain magazines showing its curtains partly rolled therein, and Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line of Fig. 3.
In the drawing let A represent part of a stock car of usual construction having ends and 11 and open- work sides 13 and 14, said sides being provided with the usual longitudinal vertically spaced slats 15 mounted upon the usual uprights 16 or other suitable cross bars.
Arranged in two diagonally opposite cor ners of the car immediately above the floor 17 are a pair of upright cylindrical magazine curtain holding casings 1S and 19 which are similar in construction. A detail description of one will therefore suffice it being understood that a curtain 20 is held by the magazine 18 for covering a portion of the side 14 of the car and that a curtain 21 is held by the magazine 19 for covering a portion of the side 13. The magazine such as 18 is formed by a thin shell which is open at its upper and lower ends and formed with a vertical slot 22 through which. the curtain can be drawn either into rolled or extended condition. On the lower end is secured a skeleton frame 23 having a centrally disposed step bearing for the vertical revoluble shaft or roller 2 1.. The upper end of this roller is journaled in a support 25 mounted in the casing and carries abevel gear 26 with which a bevel pinion 27 engages to revolve the roller, said pinion being mounted on a drive shaft 28, which is journaled across the casing and carries the folding handle 29 by which it is turned. The top of the casing is entirely closed by the cover 30. This casing containing said parts is mounted by suitable brackets 31 and 32 on the ends or side of the car with its slot 22 adjoining a vertical slot across the slats 15 in the side 14: so that the curtain 20 can be drawn freely outwardly or moved inwardly through the side. When drawn out wardly, it is stretched longitudinally along the lower portion of the side of the car past the door and detachably fastened in out stretched position by snaps 3 1 on the curtain and rings on the sides of the car or by other suitable means. In this outstretched condition the two curtains on the lower portion of the two sides of the car afford sufficient protection to stock in the car without shutting off too much outside fresh air and injuriously affecting the stock. When desired the fastening devices 34: and 35 can be uncoupled and the curtain rolled into the magazine in readiness for use again by turning the crank 29. The entire device is protected in the corner of the car by horizontal guard rails 36 which are fastened to one side and end of the car. These guard elements serve to protect the magazine from the stock in the car.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1- 1. In combination with a stock car body having an open-work side, a magazine arranged in one corner adjacent one side of the car body, a roller journaled in said magazine, said side having an opening adjoining said magazine, a curtain secured by one end to said roller and its other end being adapted to be drawn through said opening ins-aid side and moved longitudinally over 7 and to said side and means for turning said roll to wind said curtain in said magazine.
2. In combination with a stock car body having an open-work side, a cylindrical magazine arranged in upright position in one corner adjacent one side of the body, a roller journaled in said magazine, said side having a substantially vertical slot adjoining said magazine, a curtain attached to said roller and having its free end adapted to extendthrough said opening and to be moved longitudinally over the lower portion of said side substantially from end to end of the body, means for detachably fastening said curtain in outstretched condition to said side and a guard placed in front of said magazine in said body to protect the magazine from stock in the body.
3. In combination with the open work side of a stock car, a curtain morably disposed longitudinally over a portion of said side, means for detachably securing the edges of said curtain to the side of the car, said side being formed with a slot through which one end of the curtain extends into the car and a magazine roller stationed in the car adjacent said slot and upon which the curtain is adapted to roll longitudinally of the car.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
