Mosebach, Honey Brook, Pa. Application November 24,1945, Serial No. 630,580
2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to improvements in screen equipment for windows, the primary object in view being to provide for the usual window inexpensive and easily installed roll screen equipment adapted for unrolling of the screen by merely raising the lower sash and for rolling into a hidden, safely stored, readily accessible position when not in use, all to the end that inconvenient and frequently dangerous fitting of separate screens in windows may be dispensed with, also storing of window screens in remote places. 7
Other and subordinate objects also comprehended by my invention, together with the precis nature of my improvements, and the manifold advantages thereof, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly broken away, and shown in section, of a window equipped according to my invention in the preferred embodiment thereof,
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the lower sash and the screen, together with the pintle rods,
Figure 4 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 44 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a detail view in vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my invention has been shown therein as forming part of the equipment of the usual window, with upper and lower sashes 2 vertically slidable between a parting strip 3 and outer and inner stops 4, -5 in a frame 6 set into a wall I and including a sill member 8.
According to my invention, a trough 9 of any suitable material, for instance, sheet metal, or plastic, is fitted in the wall 1 immediately below the sill member 8 to extend along said member with its top closed thereby. Preferably, the trough 9 is provided with a front, upper offset portion Ill fitting in a slot II in the Wall 8. The usual lower, detachable, trim panel l2 covers the slot A moisture drain pipe l3 extends laterally from the bottom of the trough 9 to the outside of the wall 1.
A spring wound roller M is suitably mounted at its ends in bearing blocks |'5 in the ends of the trough 9. The roller I4 is preferably of the type used for window shades, but is freely rotatable in opposite directions, respectively, in the bearing blocks I5, and is provided with circumferential end flanges l6 for a purpose presently seen.
A flexible screen, preferably of light, plastic, mesh material, is suitably connected at one edge thereof to the roller M to be wound up thereby. The opposite edge of the screen I! is detachably attached, as presently described, to the bottom of the lower sash 2, A longitudinal slot |*8 in the sill member 8 permits the screen I! to be pulled upwardly off the roller l4 and out of the trough 9 through said member 8.
The plastic mesh IQ of the screen I! is bounded by a flexibl steel binder 20 suitably attached to said mesh as by crimping over the edges of the same. As will be understood, the screen I1 is designed to slidably fit in the frame 6 between the parting strip 3 and the inner stop 5.
For detachably attaching the before mentioned edge of the screen [1 to the sash 2, a pair of hinge barrels 2|, 22 are formed on the binder 20, forming said edge, and adjacent to opposite corners of said screen. A thin strip 23, preferably of metal, is secured in any suitable manner to the bottom edge of the lower sash 2, as by imbedding therein, and has formed thereon pairs of hinge barrels 24, 25 at opposite ends of said strip, spaced apart in each pair to accommodate the barrels 2|, 22 therebetween. Suitable pintle rods 26, 2'! are extended slidably through the pairs of hinge barrels 24, 25 and the hinge barrels 2|, 22 for removal by sliding toward the vertical center of the sash 2. A flexible, resilient fin 28 on the binder 20, between the hinge barrels 2| 22, bridges the space between the pairs of hinge barrels 24, 25, but may be flexed asid to permit the pintle rods 26, 21 to be removed.
A pair of guard strips 29, 30 of thin metal, preferably, are provided in thetop of the trough 9 to extend from end to end thereof upon opposite sides of the screen I! with edge rollers 3|, 32 suitably mounted thereon to bear against 0pposite sides of said screen. The strips 29, 30 may be fixed in any desired manner to opposite sides of the trough 9, and together with the rollers 3|, 32 serve to prevent insects from falling into the trough 9.
The inner or front side 33 of the trough 9, throughout the portion I0, is designed to fit flush against the trim panel l2 and the rear, upper edge of the trough 9 to seat against the bottom of the sill member 8, as at 34, whereby. together with the fit of said portion in the slot II, the trough is securely held in proper position in the wall I.
As will now be seen, my invention provides a roll up screen arranged to be unwound from below the sill of the window by merely raising of the lower sash and to screen the window below said sash. Obviously, the screen may be wound up, when the sash is lowered, into housed, protected and hidden position. The equipment involved is simple in construction, requires few parts, and may be installed permanently in any usual window structure at a comparatively low cost. By removing the pintle rods 26, 21, the
screen I! may be dispensed with, when no screen is desired, and will be wound up until barrels 2|, 22 engage the rollers-3|,
on top thereof where the same may be grasped by a suitable implement so that the screen may be pulled up out of the hinge T ,2 32 and lie a the slot II and again attached to the sash 2, when screening is desired for the window. When the hinge barrels 2|, 22 engage-- the rollers 3|, 32, said rollers act as stops limiting winding up of the screen 11. Obviously, the described screen equipment may be duplicated at the top of the window in connection with the upper sash l. V The foregoing will, it is believed, sufllce' to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims;
What I claim is: j
1. A roller screen for a window connectable to a sliding sash of said window and adapted to be unrolled by upward sliding of said sash comprising a strip of flexible screening, a pair of hinges on one end of said strip spaced apart along said end with aligned hinge pintles therein removable by sliding toward each other, said hinges being attachable to said sash, and a member on said end of the strip interposed between said hinges to prevent removal of said pintles, and bendable out of interposed position to permit said pintles to be removed for detaching said end of said strip from said sash.
2. A roller screen for a window connectable to a sliding sash of the window and adapted to be unrolled byupward sliding of said sash comprising" a strip of flexible screening, devices at one end of said strip attaching the same to said sash and detachable from said sash to free said strip from the sash, means for rolling up said strip under spring tension when freed, and means to limit "such rolling up of said strip comprising a pair of fixed platesbelow said sash spaced apart with confronting'edg'es and a pair of guide rollers rotatably mounted on said edges and frictionally engaging opposite sides of said strip, said rollers engaging said devices when detached to stop rollingup of the strip.
