OSWALD J. NEFF, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
wr vnow ATTACHMENT.
Application filed June 11,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSWALD J. NEFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the. county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in l/Vindow Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to an attachment for windows.
The object of the invention is to produce a device which may be easily secured to a window casing to project outwardly therefrom, the said device having transparent panels whereby the occupant of a room may observe surroundings both in front and to thesides of the room.
It is a further object of the inventionto produce a removable collapsible bay window attachment for ordinary window casings which may be either square, oblong or any other desired shape. which may be easily '1 and securely attached to the window casing or frame and as readily removed therefrom, and which, when not desired for use may be folded to provide a'small bundle or package for storage or transportation.
The foregoing objects, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a constmction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings,
In the drawings Fi ure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one form of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a second form of the improvement.
Fi 3 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view approximately on the line 4.1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the top member, looking toward the under face thereof.
Fig. 7 is a view showing the improvement folded In Fig. 1 of the drawings my improved bay window attachment for ordinary windows presents a front, sides, and angle corners between the front and sides, while in Fig. 2 the improvement employs a straight front and right angular sides. The im- Specification of Letters Patent.

by the numeral 1. To the sides of the casing, outward of the sashes is secured my improvement which is broadly indicated by the numeral 2. The improvement has its body constructed of a plurality of sections, all of which being hingedly connected whereby the sectlons may be folded against each other when the device is not in use. The
front includes a central mullion 3 to which the glazed frames or panels 45 are hinged as at 5. The mullion 3 comprises a chan neled member which is substantially U- shaped in cross section and which has its outer'edges formed with oppositely extending flanges which are indicated by the numeral 6, and to these flanges the hinges 5 for the panels a are secured. The channeled face of the mullion is arranged upon the outer face ofthe improvement, asthe sides, hereinafter to be referred to, are usually of a greater width than the respective panels 4., and therefore when the sides are swung over the panels 4, and the panels are swung to a right angle on the mullion the free and outer ends of the sides will be received in the channel of the mullion.
It should be here stated that the joints between all of the hinged parts of my improvement are protected by weather excluding strips 7.
The outer edges of the panels 4 are beveled and the confronting edges of the corner panels 8 are likewise beveled. By this arrangement the corner panels may be retained at a desired angle with respect to the front panels. The corner panels are glazed and are hingedly connected to the front panels as indicated by the numeral 9. To the corner panels the side panels 10 are hinged as at 11 The side panels may be also glazed, and the confronting edges of both of the corner and side panels are beveled as indicated by the numerals 12 and 13 respectively.
Preferably, but not necessarily the panels of the improvement, at the adjacent or lower edges thereof are provided with inwardly I extending cleats indicated by the numeral 14, and to these cleats the bottom board 15 of the improvement is secured. The said board may be secured to the cleats in a manner which will permit of the removal of the bottom board when desired. As a matter of fact the bottom board may be dispensed with and a screen or the like may be substituted therefor.
The side panelsyadj acent their inner ends have openings therjethrough, and through these openings pass the securing-elements 16 which enter the sides of the window casing. The securing elements are preferably in the nature of screws which are readily-inserted and readily removed.
The top or roof of the construction is indicated by the numeral 17. This roof is in the nature of a flat member and has on its under face depending cleats arranged in spaced pairs, the outer cleats'b'eing indicated by the numeral 18 andthe inner cleats by the numeral 19. Between these cleats the upper edges of the body portion of the device are received, and if desired securing elements, such as short brads may be passed through the inn'ercleats 19 to engage with the body members of the construction. The
roofhas at its inner edge an upturned flange I 20, and this flange, adjacent to the ends thereof has openings therethrough for the reception of securing elements that enter the side members of the window casing.
The improvement may be easily and quickly set up upon a window casing and.
when employed theoccupant of a room may readily observe conditions on the exterior I thereof to either side of the room which is for, serves as .a ventilator for cooling the air in the window.
The construction illustrated in the modification disclosed in Fig. 2 and in the sectional views has the front thereof constructed in the same manner. as that previously described, but the corner panels are dispensed with and the side panels 21 are iingedly connected to the front panels 22. The front panels are hinged as at 23 to a central piece in the nature of a channeled mullion at that issimilar to the mullion 3. The top 25 is of the same construction as the top or roof 17, except that the depending cleats '26 and '27 which are arranged in spaced pairs on the under face thereof-are shaped to receive therein the right angularly arranged front'and sides.
It is believed that the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will present themselves to those skilled in the art to which such'inventions appertain without further-detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what Iclaim isz+ I 1 A collapsible and removablebay window attachment for window "casings, comprising a plurality of hingedly cennectedtransparlent panels, a channeled 'mullio'n between the front panels towhich the said frontzpanels are hinged, the channelof the said mullion being designed to receive thereinthe edgesof the outer panelswhen the latter are folded upon the front panels and "the "front panels are folded against the sidesof the mullion, cleats on the inner face at the panels adjacentto the lower edgesth'ereof, a bottom seeuredto the cleats, atop having depending spaced cleats receiving therebetween the upper edges of;the.panels, securing'means for the top, and weatherexcluding strips at the confronting hinged ends of the panels.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
OSWALD QT. NEFF.
