To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM CHADD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes- Barr, in the county of Luzerne and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tents, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of tents in which the canvas comprising the Walls and I roof is stretched upon frames which are adapted to fold compactly together for convenience in transportation; and it has for its object to provide a tent of this class, which shall be simple, durable, and strong, and which may be easily and quickly put up or taken down, as occasion may require. 7 \Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of a frame or casing and the tentframes hinged therein, together with such other details as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the tent folded for transportation. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing thetent erected for occupation. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line as w in Fig. 4.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A designates a rectangular frame of thedimensions of the ground area of the proposed tent. This frame, which forms practically a shallow bottomless casing, is usually to be constructed of wood, re-en forced at the corners by. angle-plates l3 J3 of sheet, metal. The front C of the casing is provided at its lower inner 4o edge with a step I), to which the front walt E of the tent isconnected by meansof hinges F which admitof its being raised to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. land t of the drawings. The rear end (1" and sides (I (1* of the casing are likewise provided with steps 1) D and l)" of grad natty-increasing height, to which the rear wall 1 1 and side walls E E of the tent-frame are hinged, as shown. within the casing on top of one another in the order named; the casing A being of such a height to accommodate the thicknesses of the four wall-frames, and in addition thereto the roof-frames, which are hinged to the side frames, as will be presently described, and the floor of the tent. The front and rear wall frames E E have gable tops of any desired pitch to supportthe roof-frames F F, which are hinged, shown at It ll, to the upper edges of the side frames E E in such a manner as to project over said side walls and form eaves G QC, ()ne of the roof-frames F is provided at its ihner edge with a ridgcplate ll, which is folded so as to form a groove I, adapted to receive a flange I formed by a ridge-plate ll upon the roof-frame F. By this construction the roof-frames may be locked together, as will be clearly seen in Fig. l of the drawings, and the jointbetween said frame will be perfectly water-tight.

The several frames of which my improved tent is composed are to be light wood frames covered with a good quality of canvas, which may be stretched upon the said frames and tacked or otherwise secured thereto. Light metallic frames of suitable construction may, however, be used without departing from my invention.

The front-wall frame E is provided with a door J, and the front C of the casing A has a recess K correspomling or registering with the door-opening, so as to make the tent convenient of access.
