3 Claims. (Cl. SiS- 110) This invention relates to Window constructions and the like which include a pivoted louver assembly and means for controlling the movementI of the louvers in the assembly. It is particularly adaptable for window openings in poultry houses, ventilated attic vwindows and the like.
It is a general object of my invention to provide a louver assembly which can be conveniently opened and closed and which when closed effectively seals the aperture in which they are used against leakage of air past said louvers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a louver assembly with eiective stop means for holding opposite edges of a pivoted louver wherein a common stop member is provided between the adjacent edges of adjacent louvers, said stop forming the seal between said adjacent edges when said louvers are closed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for screening a louvered window and also for providing a grill work, the latter not only acting to prevent the entrance of birds and small animals but also as an auxiliary stop for the pivoted louvers. Y
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the views, and in which:

Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the auxiliary jamb plate used in the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail of the louver shown in Figs. 3 and 4;
Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line I-l of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 8--8 of Fig. 6.
In Figs. 1 and 2 there Vis shown a portion-of a building structure which includes inner sheathing I0 or some other suitable material and, as shown in Fig. 2, this sheathing is attached to studs I l on the outer sides of which is fastened outer sheathing I2. There is also shown a window frame including jambs I3, a top member I4 and a sill I5. Suitable trim IS lies` around the outer edge of the frame.
Extending across the frame between the jambs I3 are rods Il which are mounted for pivotal movement in said .iambsV I3. Connected to the rods I'I are louver panels I8, the connection between said rods I1 and panels I8 being adjacent the tops of said panels as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.v Brackets I9 are secured to the upper central portions of said panels I8, and said brackets extend inwardly beyond the connes of the window frame. yThe inner or left-hand end of said brackets as Viewed in Fig. 2 are in vertical alignment and are connected together by a chain 20, said chain extending downwardly to a point adjacent the sill I5, and its links are adapted to be slipped over a chain 20a to hold the louvers in any desired open position. A spring 22 is connected to the uppermost bracket I9 and also to a screw or other fastening 23 fixed in the inner sheathing It), said spring normally holding the louvers I3 in the full line position in Fig. 2. The dotted line position in that gure is the open position to which the louvers can be swung by pulling downwardly on chain 20.
Extending horizontally between the jambs I3 are an upper stop member 24, a lower stop member'25 and intermediate stop members 26. The upper stop 24 has a slanted side edge 2l on its inner or left-hand side. The lower stop member 25 has a slanted edge 28 on its outer or righthand side. The stop members 2E have slanted edges on their right and left-hand sides whose angularity conforms to that of the slanted sides on the upper and lowervstops 24 and 25. As best illustrated in Fig. 2 when the louvers I3 are closed each louver at its upper and lower longitudinal edges will simultaneously contact the slanted faces of two stop members. As will also be seen in this view each louver is contacted by a stop member at its outer upper longitudinal edge and its inner lower longitudinal edge.
Between each of the rods I1 and the stop member positioned therebelow is a plurality of horizontal bars 29 which lie in parallel spaced relationship and which serve as a grill work to assist in closing the window opening against the entrance of birds and small animals. It should be noted that the rods 29 lie generally in alignment with the inner. sides of the louvers I. In addition to serving as grill rods said rods 29 also coopn erate with the stop members 24, 25, 26 and act as supplementary stops and also brace the louvers intermediate their edges when said louvers are in closed position.
A screen frame 3D is shown secured to the inner side of the window frame by means of suitable =fastenings such as dowel pins 3|. The upper horizontal screen frame member is provided with an aperture 32 through which the tension spring 22 passes and the lower horizontal member of the screen frame 3U is provided with an aperture 33 through which the chain 20 extends.
Figs. 3 through 8 illustrate another embodiment of the invention. In Figs. 3 and 4 there is shown the window frame including the upper member I4., jambs I3, sills I5 and trim I6. The inner sheathing I?) and outer sheathing I2 are also shown. The studding Il is also shown as in Fig. 2.
Secured to each of the jambs I3 is an auxiliary jamb plate 34 which has a series of angular cutouts in an edge dened by slanting bevelled edges 35 and horizontally disposed bevelled edges 36. The auxiliary jamb plate 34 also has a plurality of apertures 3T adapted to pivotally receive the ends of louver pivot members I'la which pivotally support louvers ma. Louver operating brackets ida are secured to the louvers I8a. similarly to the brackets I9 on the louvers I8 in Fig. 2. The louver brackets I9a are articulately arranged and operated by a common operating chain a. A tension spring 22a connects the'upper bracket lila with a suitable portion of the inner sheathing Iii as in Fig. 2. The auxiliary jamb plates 34 are provided with sets of apertures 3l which receive grill rods 29a and a plurality of stop members 24a, a and 26a are also provided in the same manner as in the first described embodiment. The upper stop member 24a is positioned in a suitable notch formed in the louver plate 34 and the intermediate stop members 25a have their ends seated in cut-outs 38 in said auxiliary jamb plate i. The auxiliary jamb plates 34 are secured to the jambs as by screws 39 extending through openings 4) in said jamb plates and said screws are embedded in the main window jambs I3.
Figs. 6, 7 and S illustrate details of the construction of the louver plates I8a. The upper corners of said louver plates I8a. are cut away as at 4i) and provided with ears 4I which form sliding contact members with portions of the faces of the jamb plates 34 and the remainder of the main edges of said lo-uver plates I 8a are bent angularly outwardly to provide edges 42 which are adapted to abut the slanting bevelled` edges 45 formed on the jamb plate 34.
In order to more securely fasten the screen fraines to the window frames I provide hook members 43 on the screen frame 30 and a similar hook member 43a. on the screen frame 30a.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an adjustable louver assembly which can be conveniently operated and easily moved from an open to a tightly closed position wherein the pivoted louvers in their closed position are eifectively held by stop members which do not only seal the window opening in which the louvers are used but also provide a firm support for said louvers when closed. The assembly is provided with grill bars to prevent the entrance of small animals and birds, and said grill bars are arranged to further support the louver plates when the louvers are in closed position. Not only is a grill provided for the window opening but a screen device is also designed to be used with an assembly of this type to prevent the entrance of insects through the window. The arrangement shown in Figs. l and 2 is adaptable when the window is being constructed, and the structure shown in Figs. 3 through 8 is particularly advantageous for installing the louver assembly in a previously constructed Window opening. 'I'he auxiliary jamb plates 34 serve as readily insertable members for supporting the louvers, stops and grill bars.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of my invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In an adjustable louver assembly for windows and the like, an open frame, a plurality of louver panels extending across said frame and being pivoted relative to said frame, said louvers being swingable through arcs intersecting the arcs of swinging movement of next adjacent louvers, stops intermediate adjacent louver edges and engageable with edge faces of two adjacent louvers, said stops extending across said open rame to form a seal between the adjacent edges of adjacent louvers, and groups of spaced bars lying in planes parallel to and immediately adjacent said louvers when the latter are closed to permit said louvers to contact said bars and stops simultaneously.
2. In an adjustable louver assembly for windows and the like, an open frame including a pair or oppositely disposed substantially parallel jambs, auxiliary jamb plates secured to opposed faces of said jambs, a plurality of louver panels extending across said frame and pivotally supported by said auxiliary jamb plates, said louvers being articulated for simultaneous movement, stop members extending between said jamb plates and lying in the path of movement of said louver panels, portions of said auxiliary jamb plates having bevelled edges, portions of the end edges of said louvers being bent at oblique angles parallel to the bevelled edge portions of said auxiliary jamb plates and positioned to abut said bevelled edges, said stop members and bevelled edges of said auxiliary jamb plates being positioned to contact portions of said louver panels simultaneously.
3. In an adjustable louver assembly for windows and the like, an open frame, a plurality of louver panels pivotally supported by and extending across said frame and lying Substantally within the interior limits of said frame, a plurality of stop members extending across .said frame in vertical parallel spaced relationship, said pivotally mounted louvers being positioned between adjacent pairs of said stop members and in substantially parallel longitudinal relationship to said stop members, the uppermost of said stop members having a slanted side edge, the lowermost of said stop members having a slanted edge along the side opposite to the slanting edge of the uppermost stop member, intermediate stop members having slanting edges similar to the slanted edge of said upper stop member and on corresponding sides thereof, said intermediate stop members having their opposite side edges slanting the same as the slanting edge of said lower stop member, said stop members with their slanting edges being so positioned relative to said louvers that said stops will engage opposite faces of opposite edges of each of said louvers simultaneously, and a plurality of bars extending across said frame and lying 'in planes substantially coincident with lines between the angular faces of adjacent stop members.
