AM NO. 134,960. Patentedlan.l4,l873.

AM. FHOTO-LITHOGIMPH/C on MY.( Osman/v51: PRacEss) PATENT OFFICE.
JoHN W. WHITEHEAD, OF snoo, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKES FOR SPINNING-MULES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,960, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN W. WHITEHEAD, of the city of Saco, in the county of York and State ofM aine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Operating Brakes applicable to spinning-mules and other machinery; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawing which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan View; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
I designate my invention as a self-operatin g brake, and its object is to prevent all jar, concussion, recoil, or rebound of the carliage as it strikes in or-out, which jar or recoil, especially in spinning fine yarns, causes many ends to break, and requires more labor or help to operate the mule, involving, of necessity, great expense, loss of time, waste of material, and the production of inferior yarns.
The following description and reference to the drawing will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use my invention.
In the drawing, A is intended to represent the ordinary carriage of a spinning-mule to which my brake is attached. a represents a cord or chain; 1), the small pulley around which it passes; 0, the large pulley which is received under the springs; 01 d, the springsall arranged substantially as shown in the draw The cord or chain a, passing around the small pulley 1), serves to keep the carriage A firm and steady as it travels back and forth. As the carriage approaches either end the large pulley c is received under the spring (1, which presses fully upon its top and allows the carriage to come gradually to a stop, without the thumping or recoil attending the operation of some machines, and which is obviated by the use of my brake or a similar device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the pulley c on the mule-carriage with the springs 61 d, substantially as described, and for the purpose mentioned.
