Description

'll'NI'I'ED STATES JOHN MCDONALD, OF GONOORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-FRAM ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,766, dated October 1, 1872.
To alb'whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that I, JOHN MCDONALD, manufacturer, of the town of Concord, in the county of Oabarrus and State of North Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for the Manufacture of Cotton, .Wool, and other Fibrous Materials into Roving and Yarn; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in applying to the slivers of cotton, as they pass from one pair of rollers to another in the several conveying and drawing operations through which the cotton passes from the cards to the twisting of it in the spinning operation, collars having converging apertures resembling the section of the sliver, which, by smoothing down any loose or projecting fibers upon the sliver, avoid waste by preventing the fibers from becoming detached, and, resting tangentially against the faces of the rollers, burnish them and prevent the sliver from adhering to them, and enable me to dispense with the process of varnishing the rollers.
I will now proceed to "describe the mode in which the said invention is made and operated, referring, in so doing, to the drawing annexed,
. which is made of full working size;
Figure 1 shows fa plan view; Fig. 2 shows a horizontal section of this invention; and Fig.3, a vertical section.
The same letters of reference apply to the same parts in the several figures.
A represents a sliver of carded cotton; B
and B a pair of rollers, between which it passes to a second pair of rollers, B and B smooth by the collar D resting tangentially W and rubbing against them. i
The collar D is preferably made of wood 0 other light material, such as horn, rawhide, or hard rubber, but may be of metal. The effect of using it is found to be a considerable saving of cotton, greater cleanliness of the mill, and the varnishing of the drawing-rollers becomes unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, I do not broadly claim the application of any converging collar to slivers of fibrous materials in course of preparation for spinning; but
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure as such by Letters Patent, is-
The collars. D with converging apertures applied to the slivers of cotton or any fibrous material during the process of extending the slivers between the carding and spinning operations, said collars resting tangentially on the roller-faces,- and cleaning and burnishin g 7 them, as described.
