Description

H. T. POTTER.
Patented May i3, i873.
W/ ww n Devices for Stopping the Spindies of Spinning Fames.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY T. POTTER, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR STOPPING THE SPINDLES 0F SPINNING-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,929, dated May 13, 1873 application filed February 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, HENRY T. POTTER, of Norwich, in. the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Pad Attachment to the Spindles of Spinning or Twistng Frames and Speeders, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in a pendent or movable pad, arranged so that, on pressure of the knee being applied to it by the operator, the saine is made to act upon the spindle to arrest the motion of it, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view or elevation of a spindle, step, and bolster with attached pad, all in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, avertical sectional view of the same in aplane at right angles to Fig. l.
Similarletters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
A represents the bolster-rail of a spinningframe, and B the spindle. C is the bolster, and D the step, which are made in one piece, so as to admit of their simultaneous adjustment and that of the spindle, whereby the separate adjustment of the step is avoided. This forms a cheap, d urable, and substantial spindle-holder, which may be held, when adjusted, by a set-screw, b. E is a friction-cone on the spindle to hold the bobbin, and-cl el are oil-holes to permit of the lubrication of the spindle in the bolster C and step D while the spindle is running, and without any liability of the oil being thrown out by centrifugal motion. G is the whir by which the spindle B is driven. Ordinarily it is customary,
when requiring to arrest the motion of the spindle, for the operator, whose hands are then employed in piecing or adjusting the yarn or thread, to apply his or her knee directly to the whir. ofthe operator to be soiled or out, and produces fretting of the band. To avoid this I arrange in front of the whira pendent or Inovable pad, H, which may be faced with copper or other suitable material, and which, in its normal condition, hangs or lies free from contact with ory pressure on the whir, but in such proximity thereto that a slight movement of the knee of the operator will cause it to bear against the whir, and so arrest the motion of the spindle. This pendent or movable pad, that may either be held away from the whir by gravity or spring-pressure, might be pivoted to or connected with a stationary portion of the frame but it is preferred toconnect it with the bolster, step, or other adjustable portion of the spindle-holder, so that when setting the spindle up or down it will move along with the latter, and thereby be retained in the same relation with the whir at all times. This latter arrangement is the one shown in the drawing.
Claim.
What is here claimed, and desired to be se cured by Letters Patent, is-
' The combination ofa pendent or movable pad with the spindle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY T. POTTER.
