IMPROVEMENT IN TOP ROLLS FOR DRAWING-FRAMES, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1452,509, dated September 2, 1873 application led May 15, 1873.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Beit known that I, HENRY T. POTTER, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement on Drawing-Rolls in-Machinery for Preparing, Spinning, or Working Cotton, Wool, and other Fibers or Yarns, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is applicable, generally, to the top roll or presser of drawing-rolls used in machinery for preparing, spinning, or working various fibers or yarns, including doubling, and in which the upper roll isA covered with leather or other soft material to give it elasticity, while the under roll presents a hard surface, and is usually iuted to give a firmer hold of the filaments. tomary to glue or otherwise ixedly attach the leather or other soft covering on such top rolls, which are usually 4made of wood, While the lower rolls are of metal. Ina top roll thus covered, the attached leather covering, getting loose at one or more points, but fast "generally, or at intermediate places, is apt to buckle 4and become defective in its bite or hold on the filaments being worked, such buckling producing an uneven surface, and, consequently, uneven drawing, which necessitates changing the roll before the covering is worn out. My invention consists in.a top drawingroll having its leather or soft covering arranged loosely around it-that is, fitting said cover close on or around, but not cementing it to, the roll, whereby any looseness forming in such free soft band, ring, or cover will necessarily run ahead, as it were, of the acting or biting portion oi' its surface on the laments or yarn as they pass between it and the lower roll; orin other words, any bagging or looseness in such free covering will be distributed ahead over the roll, thereby preventing buckling of the cover, and insur- Ordinarily, it is cusing its smoothness at all times where it is in contact with, or in proximity to, the lower or driving roll. This gives an even drawing of the ber, does away with the delay'and expense of frequently changing the top roll, and utilizes the full wear of the cover. A top drawing-roll constructed in accordance with my invention maybe applied with great advantage to preparing-machines in Worsteddrawing, roving, and to spinning-frames.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this specification, Figure l represents an edge or peripheral view of a divided top drawing-roll constructed in accordance with my invention 5 Fig. 2, a sectional View in direction of the length of the rolls axis; and Fig. 3, an end view of the roll.

A A represent the body of the roll, which may either be of wood, metal, or any other suitable material, and be either plane on its peripheral surface or cross-iluted, as shown in Fig. 3, to induce a better hold of the leather or other soft covering B upon it, such cover or covering being arranged loosely, though closely, as hereinbefore described, on or around the peripheral surface of the roll, and ormin g a free vsoft band or ring thereon, for the purposes hereinbefore specified. Said loose cover is guided or kept from getting out of place by collars or flanges I) b on the sides or ends of the roll.

What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

A top drawing roll having its leather or other soft covering tted loosely upon it, so as to forni a free soft band or ring, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
