maPRovEMlnn' IN FLIERIs FoR covERiN'G BONNET-WIRE.
Specification forming part of Lettera Patent No. 140,322, dated :Tune.24, 1673; application filed Aprn 11, 1813.
To all uhom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, ERAsTUs H.ATYLER, of Rockville, ofthe county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful 'Improvement in Bonnet Wires and Fliers for the| making thereof; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in thc following specitication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whieh- Figure l is a top View, Fig. 2 a side eleva` tion, and Fig. 3 a horizontal. section, ot'oue of my improved tliers. Figs. f1 and 5 are hereinafter explained. Y
l The said flier lis for winding in helical paths about the threads covering a bonnet metallic wire, or about a cord or pack of threads, two same color or o't' different colors, or of the same kind of material, or of ditfercut kinds of materials. The ilier is supported by and so revolving in a stationary tubular arbor, A, through which the.bonnetwi1e or article to 'receive the helical threads is to pass and be drawn with the necessary degree ot' Velocity'. The iiier B consists ot" a tube, a, provided at the other with eye-piece, cl, all heilig as represented. This eye-piece, near each'of itsI ends, is provided with an eye or hole, c, having a lateral opening, f, through which the two threads from thc. bobbiu'c, arranged upon. the ier, as passed into the eye. These threads represented at y h are led. from the bobbin through the two eyes, and thence through vtwo notches, 'i k, ot' an adjustable gage,. l), fixed to an auxiliary arm, E, formed and arranged-with the flier, and fixed thereto, as represented. This arm E is also notched, as 'shown at l, and the two threads are led through the 'notch and thence to the bonnetwire to be boiind,.wliicl1 runs parallel with and close to the auxiliary arm. The gage l) is fixed to the arm E by a set-screw, l, going all being so as to admit through a slot, m,
as to be capable of.
Yof the outer of thc gage being moved and adjusted in a lengthwise direction. As one thread will bear against the inner the arm,`and the other against the .inner notch of thc adjustable gage, it will be seen that, by moving the adjustable gage toward the end of theauxiliary arm, the two threads will be increased in distance asunder, the opposite Kresult vfollowing.: the counter movement ot' the gage. Thns,.by` means of the, adjustable gage and the auxiliaryarm, made -as described, the distance apart ofthe threads wound on thc wire or its substitute. may be regulated.
Bonnet-wire as heretofore made has. so far as ly have been able to discover, had but one binding-thread wound helically about the longitudinal threads covering the metallic wire. As a consequcncl'-, the breakage ot' such binding-threml would loosen the coverl ing-threads held by it. and thus be productive of evil consequences, especially in ease of the wire being sewcd through the covering threads to an article. Witha boiniet\\'irc having two helical bluling-threads wound about it, should one become cutor broke-n thc other will generally rema'in ii1ta'ct,aud hold lthe covering-threads in place.
Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 a transverse section on an enlarged scale, ot' a piece of sut-.lr bonnet-wire. 1n this tigu1^e,a is the metallic body, b b b the longitudinal eovering-threzuls, andgh their two helical bimling-threads, such being tbc article produced by thc tlier herein before described, it being understood' that the longitudinal threads are applied to the metallic wire by such ineansas are usually adopted.
`I claim- The combination of the adjustable gage D and the auxiliary arm E, substantially as dcscribed, with thetiier ll,tooperateas'explained.
