UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS F. WARD, OF MARATHON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN SPOOL-HOLDERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. WARD, of Marathon, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Spool-Holder.
My invention is designed as a holder for spools of sewing-thread; and it consists of a revolving disk or holder mounted upon a suitable support, and provided with a series of slots or open spaces, within which the spools are placed and held by elastic strips, as hereinafter described and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing furnished and forming part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
In the drawing, Figure 1 representsa view in perspective of one of my spool-holders, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the same.
A denotes the support for the holder. It may be constructed of a standard provided with a suitable base, or as shown in the drawin g, in which latter case the holder may, if desired, be attached to a work-table in either a horizontal or vertical position. B denotes the holder. It consists of a disk loosely mounted upon the support, and capable of being re- 0 in each instance denotes an open slot. Several are shown made in the disk around and near the outer edge of the same. D denotes strips of elastic material.
They are attached to the disk adjacent to the slots 0, and passed over and underneath the same to the outer edge of the disk, where their ends are fastened. By releasing one end of each elastic strip the spools may be placed within the slots and the strips again securely fastened, thereby holding the spools in the1r proper positions. The thread upon each spool is drawn through an opening made in the disk, extending from its outer edge to the slot. The slots are preferably made of difl'erent sizes to suit the various sizes of the spools of thread. The elastic strips D not only serve to hold the spools in proper position, but act as tension devices, preventing the withdrawal of more thread than is required.
When desired, there may be employed in connection with the elastic strips D a rod or spindle, E, which passes across each slot, and is supported at the sides of the same. As represented in the drawing, upon each rod two spools of thread can be placed, the elastic strips serving to prevent them from turning too freely during the withdrawal ot the thread.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The within-described spool-holder, consisting of the revolving disk B mounted upon a suitable support, and provided with the slots 0 and elastic strips D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
