SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N o. 556,592, dated March 17', 1896.

.To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN C. F. TRACHSEL and JOHN C. E. TRAcHsEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Spools,

' like, and which may also be used for the iiling of papers, bills, or as a hat or coat hook.

Vith this end in view the invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter1 set forth and then speciiically designated by the claim.

To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention relates to make and use the same, we will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring by number to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective showing two of our devices secured upon a table and in use as a skeiirholder; Fig. 2, a perspective showing the device adapted to support a ball of yarn; Fig. 3, a perspective of one embodiment of our improvement; Fig. 4, a further modification showing the device adapted for use as a bill-hook.

Similar numbers denote like parts in all the views of the drawings.

In the preferred construction shown in Figs. l and 2 we form the device of a single piece of wire, so bent as to constitute the clamp l, which comprises the foot 2, body 3, and vertical connecting-section et. The wire from which the device is formed is of sufficient spring quality to permit this clamp to be forced upon the edge of a board or table, where it will be retained against ordinary strain by the resiliency of said wire, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

5 is a vertical. prong, formed by the eXtension of one of the wires of the body 3, and is pointed at its upper end so as to facilitate its insertion in a ball or spool, so that it will be seen that to utilize our improvement as a skein-holder, two of the devices are placed over the edge of a table and the skein placed around the extensions 5, or spools 6, placed upon said extension, when the skein may be drawn taut by sliding one or both of the devices away from each other. In practice this is a very desirable arrangement, as it enables a skein to be unwound without entanglement of the strands of which it is composed, and in case the spools are used the operator may maintain a given position and the skein be caused to revolve by pulling with sufficient force upon the strands in the act of winding upon a ball. f

IVhen it is desired to use the device as a ballholder, a plate 7 may be placed over the prong, so as to form a broad support for the ball, as shown in Fig. 2. The device may also be used to place a spool of cotton upon, thus avoiding the annoyance of said spool falling from the table when being used in hand-sewing and the like.

In some instances it is necessary to clamp the device upon the table more firmly than would be practicable by reliance upon the resiliency of the wire of which the device is composed, and we have therefore shown a modification in Fig. 3 by which the clamp may be securely fastened to a table. This is accomplished by constructing the clamp member S of flat metal, With which is formed the disk 9, and to the latter is riveted the prong lO, similar to the prong 5.`

ll is a set-screw, threaded through the arm l2, and by the use of this screw the device may be clamped upon a table with sufficient force to prevent its removal until the screw has been backed olf. By the use of this construction the necessity for the disk 7 is obviated, as either a spool or ball may rest upon the disk 9, which will afford a sufficient bearing therefor.

W'e have found our device very useful as a temporary bill-file, since it may be clamped upon any portion of a desk or table where it will be in easy reach and not liable to accidental displacement and yet capable of being readily removed when desired, and for this purpose we have shown in Fig. 1l the vertical extension 13, elongated and terminating in the prong 14 parallel to said extension.
