Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 10, 1906.
Application filed May 9, 1905. Serial No. 259,533.
1"0 aZZ 1071,0112, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD ADAIR GLAD- NEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marion, in the county of Crittenden and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Ribbon-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to store furniture; and its object is to provide a new and improved ribbon-holder for use in retail drygoods stores, fancy-goods stores, and like places and arranged to permit mounting a roll or ribbon for convenient display and unwinding lengths as desired by purchasers without danger of the roll of ribbon being soiled by unduly handling the same or dropping it to the counter or floor.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement, showing a roll of ribbon in position, parts appearing in section; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement, showing the post turned and the supporting-spindle in position for receiving a roll of ribbon.
On a suitably-constructed base A is secured a post B, terminating at its upper end in a cross-bar B, in the free end of which and in the baseAis mounted to turn a post C, provided at or near its middle with a horizontally-disposed spindle D for centrally receiving a roll of ribbon E to allow the said roll of ribbon to conveniently turn on the spindle D. The spindle D terminates in a point D for conveniently piercing the roll of ribbon at the center thereof, and the said point D is adapted to be seated in a seat B formed in one side of the fixed post B.
In using the device the post C is turned into the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the roll of ribbon E can be conveniently placed in position on the spindle, and then the post C is turned to bring the point D in engagement with the recess B so that the free end of the point of the spindle is supported on the fixed post B and is practically held locked thereon. Now the roll of ribbonE can be conveniently turned by the store attendant so as to unwind a required length, according to the desires of the purchaser, and this operation can be repeated as long as the amount of ribbon on the roll permits. When the ribbon has been completely unwound, the post C is swung into an open position, as shown in Fig. 2, and then the paper roll is removed from the spindle and a new roll of ribbon is placed thereon, and the abovedescribed operation is repeated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the ribbon can be readily unwound from the roll to any required length, according to the desires of the purchaser, and without danger of soiling the ribbon, as the roll of ribbon'does not need to be handled by the store attendant, nor is it liable to drop on the floor or counter, as is so frequently the case in handling rolls of ribbons as now practiced.
It will further be seen that by the arrange ment described the ribbon is conveniently displayed in the store, it being understood that the device can be readily set on a counter or other suitable display-stand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A ribbon-holder provided with a base, a post fixed thereon and having a crossarm, a post mounted to turn on the said base and the said cross-arm, and a spindle extending horizontally from the said turnable post, the spindle terminating at its free end in a point adapted to be seated in a recess on the said fixed post.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD ADAIR GLADNEY.
