IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,920, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs MOORE, and SAML. W. DAY, of Oak Creek, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Basket-Machines, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a detail vertical section of our improved machine taken through the'line 00 00, Big. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line 51 y, Fig. 1. Fig. i is a2detail section taken through the line 2 2,

()ur invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for use in making splint ma-rketbaskets, laundry-baskets, 850., for turning up the sides and putting on the hoops, and which shallbesimple in construction and convenient in use, enabling the baskets to be made rapidly. The invention consists' in the table provided with flaps or equivalent slides, the bottom form, the barlever, rope, and weight, and pivoted lockingbar, in combination with each other; and in the upper form provided with an iron band and screw-clamps, in combination with the bar, lower form, and table, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the pedestal that supports the table B, ,upon which the woven splints of which the basket is to be made are laid, and which should be of the size required for the basket, so that the said woven splints may be out 011' to the desired size before the sides are turned up. The woven splints are secured to the table B by a form, 0, which is made of the exact shape and size of the bottom of the basket. To the center of the form C is secured the lower end of a bar, D, which passes up through two guides, E, connected to the joists of the room, or to other suitable supports, so that the said bar D will always move up and down in a vertical line. The upper end of the bar D is pivoted to a lever, F, one end of which is piy oted to a support, tit, connected to the joists of the room, or other suitable support. To the free end of the lever F is attached one end of a cord, H, wl 11ch passes over a pulley, I, attached to a 301st or other support, and to its other end is attached a weight, J, sufficiently large to raise the form C away from the table when the lever F is unlocked for convenience in removin g the basket. The lever F is locked to hold the form 0 down firmly upon the woven splints by a bar, K, the upper end of which is pivoted to a joist or other support, and the lower end of which is notched to rest upon the said lever and press it down, as shown in Fig. 1. The sides of the basket are turned up over the edges of the form C, and are held in place by flaps b hinged to the table B, or by slides or other convenient means. L is aform, which slides up and down upon the bar D, and which is made of such a shape and size as to fit into the mouth of the basket. The form L has legs M attached to it, which rest upon the form 0, and support the said form L in proper position. The form L is bound with an iron hoop, N, and around it is placed the inner hoop of the basket. After the corners of the basket have been woven, and the form L and inner hoop lowered into place, the outer hoop is placed around the mouth of the basket, and is secured in place by the clamps '0, one leg of which is inserted in a hole in the form L, and in a screw-hole in the end of its other leg is inserted a. hand-screw, which is screwed against the said outer hoop. The outer and inner hoops are then secured to each other and to the body of the basket by nails driven in through the outer hoop, and which are clinched by. being driven against the iron band of the form L.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The table B provided with flaps or equivalent slides 11, the form 0, bar D lever F,
rope and weight H J, and pivoted lockingbar K, in combination with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The form L provided with the iron band N and screw-clamps O, in combination with the bar D, form C, and table B b, substan= tially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
