Description

Oil-Can Stoppers.
No, 134,842, PatentedJan.14,I873.'
FIGS.
v WITNESSES. W
AM, PHOTOL/THOG'RAFHIC so. mgr mam/51s macaw STATES IMPROVEMENT I N QlL-CAN STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,842, dated January 14, 187
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS 1%. Born, of New Brunswick, county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Screw-Stoppers for Oil-Cans, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is the cheap manufacture of efiicient screw stoppers for oil-cans and other vessels and to make the said stoppers the medium through which air can be admitted to the can for inducing the free flow of oil from the nozzle without permitting it to escape through the vent.
I attain the first object by making the stopper of two pieces, a b, of sheet metal, best observed in the sectional diagram, Fig. 1, the latter piece being struck up or spun to the shape shown and threaded, and the piece a being titted over and attached to the piece I), in the manner shown in the enlarged sectional View, Fig. 2. The second object I attain by simply making a vent-hole, cl, in the top of the hollow stopper and another hole, m, in the conical termination of the stopper.
It has been usual to make both screw-stoppers and the sockets for the same of solid metal and to thread them in a lathe, a plan which I discard for the more economical plan which I will now proceed to describe more minutely.
The socket A is made of sheet-zinc or other comparatively flexible metal or alloy by strikin g it up or spinning and threading it in a manner too well understood by those familiar with sheet-metal working to need description. This socket is soldered to an oil-can, B, Fig. 3, by preference at a point between the handle e and nozzle f. The stopper is, as before remarked, made of two pieces, a and b, of sheet metal, the latter piece being struck up or spun and threaded in the same manner as the socket, but being enlarged at the top, where it has a vertical flange, h. The cap a, also composed of sheet metal and struck up, is fitted over the flange h and bent beneath the same, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby completing the screwstopper, the enlargement t at the top of which may be serrated on the edge, so as to be more effectually manipulated by the finger and thumb.
While the opening (I at the top of the stop per and the hole mbelow afford sufficient vent to induce a free flow of oil through the nozzle, the conical termination of the stopper prevents the escape of oil into the vent when the contents of the can arc agitated.
I claim as my invention The within-described screw-stopper, composed of the two pieces a and b of sheet metal, formed and attached to each other in the manner described.
2. The hollow screw-stopper having a conical termination, with avent-hole, m, and a venthole, d, at the top, all as set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- LEVVIS R. BOYD.
