Description

.l. B. SUMNER.
PAPER WEIGHT. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1919.
1,347,599. I PatntedJuly 27, 1920,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAPER-WEIGHT.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. SUMNER, a subject of the King of England, residing at Fort William, in the District of Thunder Bay and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PaperWVeights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paperweiglits, which articles are commonly used on desks for holding memoranda and paper copy.
The invention consists of a base, an angular bent arm having a cup held with its mouth extending downwardly and a ball loosely held therein. By placing the paper on the plate and pushing it under the ball, it will raise the ball so as to roll on the top of the paper and thus become a weight to hold the paper as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide an advertising medium, as it will be appreciated that articles of this kind are used more for advertising purposes than sold for their actual value as paper weights.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 shows a view of the preferred embodiment of my invention, I
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and v Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
3 indicates a base or plate which may be made of any desired material on which might be printed or impressed an advertising memorandum similar to that as shown at 4;
5 is an arm preferably having an extended upper portion having an L-shaped leg extending downwardly from one end as shown in Fig. 1. The lower portion of this leg is mounted preferably to one corner of the base '3, although it might be otherwise positioned on the base 3and the base might be circular in shape.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Serial No. 324,616.
The arm 5 supports a cup-shaped member 6 at its outer free end. This cup-shaped member 6 is detachably mounted at the under side of the arm 5 by a threaded member from the cup-shaped member 6 passing through the arm 5 and being engaged by a nut 8 so as to hold it in tight relationship to the arm 5.
Before placing the cup-shaped member 6 in tightened position in relationship to the arm 5, a ball 9 is placed in the cup-shaped member 6. It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the cup-shaped member 6 has its lower sides at a distance of the radius of the ball 9 from the base 3. By this the ball 9 cannot get discheaply manufactured and very compact for mailing.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new, is;-
A paperweight consisting of a base, an
arm mounted on said base having an outwardly extending portion, an invertedeupshaped member carried on the under side of said outwardly extending portion, a ball loosely held by said cup-shaped member on said base and said ball being adapted to be pushed into said cup-shaped member when paper is placed between said ball and said base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
