JAMES W. SHANKLAND, OF SUMMERFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,709, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SHANKLAND, of Summerfield, in the county of Noble, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting- Jack; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofa lifting jack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describeits construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a section, of my lifting-jack.
A Arepresent two standards, placed a suitable distance apart, and connected at their lower ends by a foot or platform, B, and at their upper ends by a narrow bar, 0. On the inner side of' each standard A is a series of inclined grooves, a a, and one vertical groove, 1), near the rear edge of the standard, this vertical groove extending the entire length of the standard. D represents the lever, provided with a pin, 01, projecting on both sides thereof and at the front end on the upper side is provided with a cast piece, 6, to receive the article to be raised. The pin (1 is passed through one of the grooves min each standard, the lever passing between the standards. Upon the lower side of each groove are two semicircular recesses, M, for the. end of the pin d to rest in, and for lengthening or shortening the purchase of the lever.
By means of the vertical groove 1) the lever may be moved from point to point without the trouble of taking it out while using.
In the upper side of the lever D is made a longitudinal recess, h, having teeth formed in the bottom to receive and hold the end of a pawl, E, which is pivoted between the upper ends of the standards A A.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standards A A with inclined grooves a a, notches i z, and vertical grooves b, the lever D with journal d, and the pivoted pawl E, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of October, 1872.
. JAMES W. SHANKLAND.
