To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, Fnnn R. SKINNER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in laper Bags, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain improvements in paper bags, having folding flap constitutingr a closure for the open end thereof, and refers more particularly to means for locking the flap in the closed position and permitting it to be opened at willfand at the same time serving as a handle by which the bag may be conveniently carried.

rl`he main object is to make the combined lock and handle as an integral part with a minimum waste of stock, or in other words to provide the front side of the open end of the bag with a tongue adapted tov pass through the opening in the flap as the latter' is folded to its closed position, and to provide said tongue with opposed wings capable of folding within the area of the flap opening and of unfolding beyond the walls thereof, when the flap is closed for locking said flap against accidental opening. v

Another object is to provide the tonguel with an aperture through which the finger may be readily passed for carrying the bag. Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the bag will be brought out in the following description.

In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are front elevations of a paper bag embodying the features of my invention, the flap being closed in Fig. 1 and open in Fig. 2.

Fig. 3 is a plan of a blank for forming the bag shown in Figs. l and 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional viewtaken on lines 4-4 Fig. l.

As illustrated the blank for forming this bag comprises a rectangular front portion -1-- and a back rectangular portion 2- both of'substantially the same dimensions -and integrally united end-to end alonga score line 3- upon the other.

'lhe flap- -6- is provided with a central opening -8- extending outwardly from the score line -7-, the inner end being straight and registering with said line, while the remaining portion is preferably circular for receiving a tongue presently described, on the adjacent end of the front portion -1-.

TheV width of the tongue across the wings which are preferably semi-circular, is somewhat greater than thatjof the opening 8 when the wings' are unfolded, although the remaining portions of the tongue are approximately the same or slightly less width than thatof the opening.
