Description
Un'rrnn Snares Parana UFFIGE.
FRANK O. SOHUMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSICPORTFOLIOS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133L613, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CHRISTIAN SOHUMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Music Back and Portfolio, of which the following is a specification: 7 1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents an open portfolio to which my improvement has been applied; and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same adjusted for use as a music-rack taken through the line or m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animproved portfolio for sheet-music, which shall be so constructed as to adapt it for use as a rack for supporting apiece of music while being used; and it consists in the combination of a bracket with the side plates of an ordinary portfolio, as hereinafter more fully described.
A and 13 represent the two side plates of a music-portfolio, the inner edges of which are connected by a spring back, (3, about the construction of which there is nothing new. To the middle part of one of the side plates, as A, of the portfolio is hinged the edge of a triangular plate, D. The inner edge (1 of the sheets of music and firmly support the said plate A. When the portfolio contains but little music, or is empty, the plate D will rest upon its free angle, as shown in Fig. 2. When the portfolio is to be closed the plate D is turned down upon the plate A, to which it is hinged, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be observed that when the portfolio is used as a music-rack the lower edges of the piece of music rests upon its spring back 0, which serve as a ledge to keep it from slipping down.
I have described the bracket D as made in the form of a triangular plate, but its form is entirely immaterial so long as it is connected with one plate or leaf of a music-portfolio, and so arranged as to rest upon the other plate or leaf, or upon the pieces of music placed in said portfolio to support the said leaf or plate in an inclined position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a bracket, D, with the spring back 0 and side plates A B of a musicportfolio, in such a way that it may support one of said side plates in an inclined position to adapt it to serve as a music-rack, and may be turned down out of the way when not required for use to allow the portfolio to be closed, substantially as herein shown and described.
FRANK OHRISTIAN SOHUMANN. Witnesses:
JAMES T. GRAHAM, T. B. MOSHER.
