UNITED STAT Patented October 6, 1903.
JOHANNES KosTEn, or HAMBURG, GERMANY.
FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,765, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed lliaroh 30. 1903.
To all whom it rota/y, concern:
Be it known that I, JoHANnE's Kdsrnn, a citizen of the town of Hamburg, and a resident of 13 Bohnenstrasse, Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames, of which the following is an exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in frames, and more especially to a device for supporting and suspending the frames in the sidewise as well as'in the endwise position.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the device in the position for suspending the frame in the sidewise position. Fig. 2 shows the device in the posi-" tion for suspending theframe in the endwise position. Fig. 3 shows the device in the position for supporting the frame in the sidewise position, and Fig. 4 shows the device in the position for supporting the same in the endwise position. Fig. 5 is a side view of the framein the position shown in Fig. 1, and- Fig. 6 shows the device in the perfectly fiat position.
As may be seen from the drawings, the device consists of a plated, turnably fixed to the back side of the frame. To this plate Ct a metal stripe is hinged at b. At 61 a prolongation-piece 6, serving as foot for supporting the frame, is hinged to the metal strip 0.
I h is a metal strip provided with perforations g, which is hinged to the plate a at f. In the position shown in Fig l the foot-piece e is in the position in which it forms a prolongation of the strip 0. The strip 0 is situated above the plate a. In the center of the plate a a thumb-screw 1, is provided, by means of which the strip 0 can be fixed in the position by putting the wings of the thumb-screw through the slot j, provided in the strip 0, and then turning the thumb-screw around an angle of ninety degrees. In this position the device serves for suspending the frame in the sidewise position, for which purpose a hole is is provided in the prolongation-piece e for taking up the nail or hook to which the frame is suspended.
In case the frame is to be suspended in such way that the upper edge of the same does not touch the wall-that is to say, that $erial No. 150,305. (No model.)
the frame is suspended in an inclined position-the strip a is not fixed by means of the thumb-screw i, in which case the frame will adopt automatically an inclined position.
If the frame is to be suspended in the 1ongitudinal direction, the thumb screw 1 is turned so that the same can pass through the slot j. The stripe is then raised, and the prolongation-piece e is turnedaround the hinge d. Hereafter the'plate a is turned by means of the strip 0 around an angle of ninety degrees, so as to adopt the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the" metal strip a may be fixed again by means of the thumbscrew 7 In this position a hole Z, provided in the metal strip 0, serves for suspending the frame to a nail or hook.
If the frame is to be placed upon a table or the like, the metal strip 0 is raised and the strip 7?. is put through a slot m, provided in the strip 0. In the slot on a nose or pin a is pro- .vided, which may be put into the openings g of the strip h, so that the strip 0 can be fixed in any inclined position. If the frame is to be supported so that the same stands sidewise, the prolongation-piece e is brought to the position shown in Fig. 3, while in case the frame is to be supported so as to stand endwise the device is turned round an angle of ninety degrees and the prolongation-piece e is raised to the position shown in Fig. 4, in which position the strip it passes through a slot 0, provided in the prolongation-piece.
By the arrangement described the frame can be suspended and supported in any desired position.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, whatI desire to secure by Letters Patent 05 the United States is- .1. In a frame, the combination of the frame proper, with a turnable plate a fixed to the back side of the same, a metal strip a hinged to this plate Ct and a foot-piece e hinged to the piece 0, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a frame, the combination of the frame proper, with aturnable plate a, fixed to the back side of the same, a metal strip 0 hinged to this plate a, a foot-piece e hinged to the piece a, a second metal strip h hinged to the plate a and means for fixing this metal strip ations g adapted to take up the nose n mentioned above, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a frame, the combination of the frame proper, with a turnable plate a fixed to the back side of the same, a metal strip chinged to this plate a, a foot-piece e hinged to the piece 0, a slot on being provided in the metal strip 0, a nose 'nsituated in this slot, a second 20 metal strip 71 hinged to the plate a, said metal strip being provided with perforations 9 adapted to take up the nose n mentioned above, and a thumb-screw 't' for fixing the strip 0 to the back side of the frame, substantially 25 as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHANNES KosTER.
