DEVICE FOR REFINISHING AXLES, CRANK-SHAPES, 826.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1920.
Application filed December 26, 1919. Serial No. 347.632.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TABER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Refinishing Axles, Crank-Shafts, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in a device for re-finishing the surfaces of shafting, axles, crank shaft bearings, etc, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which will be simple in construction, effective, and convenient in use.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part hereof:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in vention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sliding carriage detached.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals: 1 and 2 designate two 0ppositely disposed frame members preferably of the shape illustrated in Fig. 1. The lower frame member 1 is provided with two upwardly projecting lugs 3 and 4 adapted to receive and support two threaded rods 6 and 8, these rods being firmly secured in the lugs 3 and 1-. as shown. The bottom frame lfbetween the lugs 3 and 4-, is provided with a way or guide 1% upon which is slidably supported a longitudinally movable carriage 16, a screw 18 being employed to hold this carriage upon its way or-guide le the carriage 16 having a longitudinal slot- 20 permitting movement on the aforesaid way or guide 14-. Any desirable form of cutting instrument or file 22 is secured to this carriage 16 so as to move therewith. An adjusting screw or bolt 24': is provided which is threaded through the lug 3 and bears upon the end of the carriage 16 so that, when said bolt 24 is screwed into the lug 3, it will press against the carriage 1d and move it along its way 1 f until it reaches the end of its movement.
The aforesaid upper frame member 2 is provided with two bosses 26 and 28 which slip over the aforesaid threaded rods 6 and 8 and are capable of movingup and down on said rods, wing nuts 30 and 32 being provided on said threaded rods, over said bosses 26 and'28, for the purpose of forcing the upper frame member 2 toward the lower frame member 1, in a manner readily understood from the drawings.
Secured to the under side of the upper frame member is a block 34 of inverted V- shape which is arranged to hold the shaft properly located during the process of refinishing the untrue surface. This inverted V block 34 preferably is provided with two recesses 36 and 38 which are for the purpose of holding thick pieces of felt 39, the felts being flat and of sufficient thickness to fit in the recesses 36 and 38 whereby they are more easily held in position. The duty of the felt is to prevent the filings from embedding in the V block, thereby resulting in tearing or cutting the shaft while in operation.
Each of the frames 1 and 2 is provided with an outwardly extending lug, these lugs being designated by the numbers 4:0 and 42. The purpose of these lugs is to receive a piece of pipe to act as a handle when necessary.
In the operation of the device, the adjusting screw or bolt 24 may be operated, as occasion requires, to bring a new part of the file 22 in place, thus eliminating the necessity ofmany removals of the file during the process of truing up the surface of the shaft being operated upon, it being understood that the feed screw causes the. clean part of the file to engage with the shaft surface being filed. if the device should be turned in the wrong direction, the carriage 16 will automatically slide along its way or guide 14 and thus give warning to the operator that the device is being turned in the wrong direction.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a dev'ce of the character described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of said members having a clamping member and the other a sliding carriage provided with a cutting tool, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of said members having a clamp ing member and the other a sliding carriage provided with a cutting tool, and a screw or bolt for moving said carriage and its tool to presents. new part of the tool to the work, 5 substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described,
two frame members, one having screw rods projecting therefrom and the otherhaving parts sliding over said screw rods, nuts 011 said screw rods for moving one of said frame members toward the other to clamp the work, a carriage on one of said members provided with a tool, and a screw or bolt for adjusting said carriage and its tool, substantially as described.
4; In a device of the character described,
' two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of 'said'members having a 'V- shaped clamping member provided with oppositely disposed recesses, and felt brushes located in said, recesses projecting toward each other, substantially as described.
' 5. In adevice of the character described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of said members having a V- shaped clamping member and the other an adjustable sliding carriage provided with a cutting tool, and felt brushes carried by said V'shaped clamping member.
6. In a device of the character described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, oneof said members having a clamping member and the other a sliding carriage provided with a cutting tool, and a screw or bolt for moving said carriage and its tool to present a. new part of the tool to the work, said carriage being free to slide away from said screw or bolt if the device is turned in the wrong direction, substantially as described. j.
7 In a device of the character described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of said frame members having a 'V-shaped clamping member and the other a guideway, a carriage slidable on said guide- .way and provided with a tool, and a screw in the wrong direction, substantially as described.
9. In a device ofthe character-described, two frame members adjustable toward each other, one of said members'having a clamping member and the otherasliding carriage provided with a cutting tool, each of said frame members having a lug to receive a pipe, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the character described, two frame members, one having two bosses projecting therefrom, and provided with a guideway, screw rods projecting from said bosses, the other frame member'having a V shaped clamping member located over said uidewa'y, a carriageslidable on said guideway under said V shaped clamping member, ascrew passing through the end of the frameand co-acting with said carriage to move the carriage and its tool on said guideway to present a new part of the tool to the work, and nuts on said screw rods for moving the upper frame member and its V- shaped clamping member toward the carriage and its tool, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
