IMPROVEMENT IN MEMORANDUM-BOOKS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1134 5 16, dated January 7, 1873 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HINSDILL, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Memorandum-Books, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to office scratchbooks or memorandum-tablets; and my improvement upon such a thing is designed to take the place of the memorandum-block now in use, and which has three of its sides glued or fastened together so that the leaves cannot be opened without tearing two of their edges apart, which destroys their permanent connection with the block, and therefore necessitates the removal of each leaf as it is used. Thisimprovement consists of ainemorandumblank, not of a block but of book-form, in which the leaves are mounted upon a back with their upper edges only held or secured by a strip of metal or other material, leaving the sides and lower edges of each leaf free to allow each leaf to be used and held in place, or removed at any point for use by others, leaving the book intact, the said back having an extension at the top and provided with a hole by which to hang it up, the article forming a new, cheap, and convenient scratch-tablet of book-form for preservation of the memorandums, or their separation for use, as'may be required, while at the same time it has a handle extension, which also serves to hook it up out of the way.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents aview in perspective of a memorandum or scratch book embracing my improvement; Fig. 2 represents a view of the upper portion of the same, showing the pencil in its holdingsocket; and Fig. 3, a section through the length of the scratch-book.
The blank leaves P are cut in any suitable manner and secured by their upper edges a only to a back, A, by means of a strip of metal, wood, or stiff paper, B, by rivets or glue, in a manner to leave them free to be used without removal, or to be removed in whole or in part without disturbing the others, thus keeping the book intact until it is used up, which in such an article is of very great advantage and convenience for the user over the block-tablet.
now in use, in which each leaf must be separated and destroyed before another can be used from the same block. The back is extended above the'holding-rib-of the leaves to form a handle and provided with an eye, H, for the convenience of hanging it up out of the way. A pocket, S, for a pencil is also secured beneath the ends of the leaves just at the ridge formed by the leaves at the extended end of the back; and these things, thus arrangedand put together, form a new, cheap, and convenient scratch-book for preservation of memorandums made, or removal of such memorandums as may be made for use by other parties, being a new article of trade as a scratchbook.
The leaves of such things now in the trade are made for detachment in succession, and cannot be used in any other way while my improved article is mounted on a board, so that the leaves may be either permanent or removable in part or in the whole, and in this respect possesses a practicability and usefulness much desired for office use.
Having described my invention, I claim The office memorandum-book having its leaves secured for use by the plate B, as described, and provided with a handle or holding-piece to make a new article for the trade, as set forth.
HENRY M. HINSDILL. Witnesses:
EDWARD TAGGART, NIRAM A. FLETGHER.
