UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
Application filed February 12, 1920. Serial No. 358,093.
lie it known that we, Fnnoieiiicii (ioizii'iz and RVs-snm. \\'iirrco.\iii citizens of the United States, residing: at Newark, in the coiintiv ol' llsscx and State of New Jersey, and residing at Elizabeth, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanjyfing drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
to an improved case or box for toilet preparations; and the invention refers, more particularly to a novel compartment box rovided with novel sealing means separating or dividing the compartments against escape of the contents thereof from` one to the other when the box is closed, and con sequently intermixture .of different itoilet preparations contained 1n the' several wmpartments. y
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple compartment box to contain'variousl colored rouge and face-pow der,in the orm 4o compacts or cakes or other desired form, ready for use, and separated from each other by a novel sealing means adapted to co-act with the box-cover,
. when the latter is closed, to seal the com partments against the escape of the preparations froin their respective compartments into any of the other compartments, thereby preventing preparations of one color being spoiled by intermixture or mingling with preparatioiris` 'of another color; as, for example, white face powder being spoiled hy intermixtnrewith red or pink rouges, or vice versa.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, Will beh clearly understood from the followin detailed description of the same.
lilVith Vthe various Yobjects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel compartment box with the novel sealinpr means separating said compartments hereinafter set forth; and, the
invention consists, furthermoie, in the novel Specification of Letters Patent.
The present invention relates, generally,
2 f5" ai'iaiiizemwits and combinationsv of the w ciout dA v ire-.i and parts, as well'as in the nictails oi fTie construction of said parts, allot which will he more fully described in the following specification, and then finally einbodied in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the acwmpanying drawings, in which Figure l is a lan view of the novel com pertinent box s iowing one embodiment et the principles of the present invention, titVA same being` shown with its cover oi' lid open and the contents exposed.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the same, drawn on an enlarged scale, but showing the cover or lid in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detachable compartment partition means adapted to support the novel sealing means for co operation with the coveijor lid of the box when the same is closed.
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the novel compartment box provided with a modified construction and arran'gciiient of partition means adapted to support the desired scalmg means. r
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of said modified partition means detached from the box.
Similar characters of reference are em ployed in allot the abovidescribed views to indicate corresponding parte.
Referring;r now to said li-anillos the novel compartment box comprises a main body hin ing a bottoni l and side mills providing a receptacle. which is piel'eiiibly of elongated shape. A cover or lid 25 is suitably connected, by means of any desired `construction of hinge connection 4, with the rear side wall of Said main body, so as to be' r closed down over theopen 1e front side wall of said )rovided with a nosing or pro-" ticall I150 Bpection of Figs.
.mem r 11 is provided in its marginal edges are fitted into ch is thus exposed through t opening 7.
Fixed to the bottom 1 of said main body, s0 as to project upwardly therein is a centrally positioned transversely extending ver. 10. The interior ofthe main body is divi ed transversely by means of a novel U-shaped partition member 11 into twocompartments 13 and 14, one of which, as 13, is adapted to contain a compact or cake of l'u adapted to contain a compact or cake of fawder 16. Said U- haped partition its bottom portion 17 with an opening or slot 18 adapted to receive said lug 10, when the partition member is arranged in properl assembled relation to the main body, said ug serving to anchor said partition member in place, so that the same is securel held against accidental displacement. lonnected with the upper edges of the sides of said partition member are outwardly and oppositely extending horizontal fianges 19, which respectively overhang the interiors of said compartments 13 and 14, and which possess arc-shaped outer peripheries 20, the latter being engaged over the-adjacent margins of the compacts or cakes in said res ective compartments. Said U-shaped partition member provides a channel or holding groove 21, into which is wedged, so as to be securel heldthereby, a sealing strip 22, preferabiy made of felt, cork, rubber, leather or some material possessing a requisite degree of resiliency. The upper free edge 23 of said sealing strip 22 projects freely upward above the partition member, so as to be engaged by the lid elements when said lid is closed. When the cover or lid is closed down upon the plain body, the free edge 23 of said sealing strip yieldingly engages the inner surface of the cover or lid, and so yielding, by reason of its inherent resiliency, tends to conform to the inner surface of the lid or rover as defined by the inlay 6 with its opening 7 and holding lip 8 and by the surface of said mirror 9, thus interposing between the respective compartments and their contents a sealed obstruction, `Jvhereby any tendency of the contents of the respective compartments to escape into the neighboring compartment is prevented, so that all danger of intermingling of the contents of said compartments to their detriment is eliminated, all oi which will be clearly understood from an in- 2 and 3.
Referring now to Figs. 5 and 6, there is illustrated therein a compartment box or case, embodying a mechanical variation or modification of the principles of the present invention. ln said figures the reference 15, and the other of which, viz 14, is
' following claims.
sasoo character 24 Vindicates the main body of ay box or case to which is hinged a cover or lid 25, the latter being provided with the inlay (i having the opening 7 and holding lip 8 for securing within the same the mirror 9. rThe interior of the box or case is divided by a partition frame comprising a pair of substantially semi-circular U-shaped partition portions 26, the respective free ends of which are extended to meet or abut the respective end walls of the box or case, thus respectivelyserving to inclose the compartments 27 and 28, adapted to respectively contain a rouge compact or cake 15 and a facepowder compact or cake 16. The said U-shaped partition portions 26 provide channels or grooves in which are received and retained resilient sealing strips 29 made of felt, cork, rubber, leather or some such resilient material, said sealing strips bounding the inner sides of said compartments, and yieldingly engaging with their upper free edges the inner surface of the cover or lid, when the latter is closed, to seal the re spective compartments against the escape of any portion of their contents, for the purposes already above described. Said U- shaped partition portions 26 may be joined together in proper mutual relation to the compartment spaces to be bounded thereby, by means of longitudinal side members or plates 3U, which, if desired may also serveto partition oli relative to the lon itudinal side walls of the main body 24, longitudinal compartments 31 and 32, hold a lip stick 33 and eye brow pencil 34, agshown, said articlesI being also protected, when the case is closed, against undesired contact with powdery or flaky sheddings of the compacts or cakes 15 ing strips 29, all of which will be clearly understood from an inspection of Fig. 5 of the drawings.
vWe are aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and com 110 binations of the se'veral devices and parts, as well in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the sco e of the present invention as set forth. in t e foregoing specification, l
Hence, we do not limit our invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parte as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to t A the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
