APPLICATION FILED NOV- 5. I917.

THOMAS QUINLAN, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.
' Specification of Letters Patent. P t t J n 29, 1 2
Application filed November 5, 1917. Serial no. 200,340.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I THoMAs QUINLAN, a citizen of the United states, and resident of Milwaukee, in the'county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in School Desks and Seats, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of thls specification.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a school desk and seat which may be supported from a single standard to permit easy and convenient cleaning of the floor on which the desk and seat are mounted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a school desk and seat in which the seat portion will automatically fold to closed position when not in use and thus provide greater space between rows of desks.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a school desk and seat which may be formed of the minimum number of parts, is of simple construction and strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved school desk and seat and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: I
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved school desk and seat shown in open position;
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof with the seat portion and the supplemental back rest portion swung upwardly; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the supporting standards taken on line 4-1 of Fig. 2. I
Referring to the'drawing the numeral 5 indicates a standard or support of T-shape in cross section which is provided with an inwardly projecting base extension 6 and an outwardly proj ectingbase flange 7. The base extension 6 and the base flange 7 are provided with screw holes 8 for firmly fastening the base to the floor. The upper portion of the standard is formed with an integral arm 9 which projects inwardly in the same direction as the base extension 6, an
outer, upper flanged desk portion 10 extending at right angles to the base extension, and is also formed with a forward downwardly extending seat back flange 11 which is an angular continuation of the desk flange.
A desk board 12 is mounted on top of the flanged portion 10 and a seat back board 13 ismounted on the flanged portion ll and" are secured thereto by screws 14. The upper edge portion of the seat back board 13 pro ects slightly above the desk board to form a stop therefor. An angular member or casting 15 having a seat back flange 15 is connected to the inner end portions of both the desk board and the seat back board and forms the end member for the desk. This end member and the standard are provlded with inwardly extending shelf flanges 16 to support the book shelf board 17 and a back portion 18 for holding books, etc.
The lower end portions of the seat back flanges 11 and 15 are bifurcated and eyed as indicated by the numeral 19 to receive the eyed ends of supplemental flanged angled members 20 hingedly connected thereto by a pintle rod 21 which extends horizontally through the eyed portions. A supplemental seat back board 22 is mounted on the supplemental seat back flanged members 20 and forms in connection with the seat back board 13 a two part foldable seat back member. The lower angular end portlons of the supplemental members 20 proect forwardly and have eyed ends 23 to recelve the bifurcated and eyed ends 24 of the seat brackets 25 hingedly connected thereto by a pintle rod 26 extending horizontally throughthe eyed portions. A seat board 27 is mounted on the seat brackets 25 and may be folded with the brackets to the position shown in Fig. 3.
Coiled springs 28 and 29 mounted respectively on the pintle pins and having their end portions bearing against the adjacent portions of the seat or seat back members automatically fold said parts when the seat is not occupied.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the school desk and seat is of very simple construction and is Well adapted for thepurpose described.
What I claim as myvinvention is:
1. A desk and seat in part, comprising 'a' single standard having a base extension, a
tWo part hinged together seat back carriedby the standard, and a seat member hinged to the seat back.
2. A desk and seat in part, comprising a single standard having a base extension,
said standard also provided with a seat'back flanged portion, 'an end member having a seat back flange, a tWo part hinged together seat back mounted on the seat back flanges, and a seat member hinged to the seatback. 3; A-desk= and seat-in part, comprising a standard, a two part hinged together fold- THOMAS QUINLAN;
