JOSEPH KOZIK, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
EROTECTING SCREEN OR SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119 22 1920.
Application filed May 29, 1919. Serial No. 300,535.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Kozm, of the United States Army, a citizen of the United States, stationed at Fort Moultrie, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Screens or Shields; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a protecting screen or shield to'be used in conjunction with and as a part of a cot or dormitory bed where the cots or beds are arranged in close proximity to each other.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the characterdescribed which, by its use, will afford a means for deflecting the exhalations of the sleeper and prevent one sleeper breathing or exhaling upon a sleeper in an adjoining bed or cot.
This object is attained. by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in whichraised or operative position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the clamping member;
ig. 3 is a side view of same; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail View of a part ishowing the deflecting shield attached to 85 one supporting bar;
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the suppoating bar locking and releasing means, an
Fig. 6 is a view showing the method of connecting the sections of the attaching clamp.
Referring in detail to the parts, 1 designates the frame of a cot-bed, 2, the legs of same. 3 are hinged clamps hinged at 4 and formed with projecting ears or lugs 5 through which thumb screws 6 engage to draw the parts together when attachment to thelegs is desired.
The clamps are further provided with cut out portions forming channels 7 and 8 in which locking bars 9 and their connected operating bars 10 engage respectively. The locking bars are lugs 11 which engage recesses 12 formed upon verticallyarranged supporting bars 13.
The vertical supporting bars. engage formed. with projecting through the clamps and are held in proper vertical position by the engagement of the lugs in the recesses in same. Disengagement of the lugs is effected by means of the connected bars 10 when pressure is exerted upon same against the spring 14.
A flexible shield 14, made up of any suitable light cloth, is provided with reinforcing strips 15 to which are attached rings 16 which are adapted to engage over and about the supporting arms to hold the shield in position thereon.
A tie-strap 17 with buckle 18 is provided to afford a means to securely fasten the folded shield together when same is detached and not in use. When in use, as indicated in Fig. 1, the shield readily forms a means for deflecting the exhalations from a sleeper upwardly and thereby prevents breathing of that sleeper upon an adjoining sleeper.
Without detaching the shield from the bed, the same may be lowered out of use by disengaging the locking members in the clamps and allowing the supporting bars to be lowered.
Various modifications may be embodied in this invention without departing from the spirit of same and it is therefore understood the same is not limited to the particular form shown.
What is claimed is:
In a screen for beds, clamping members detachably secured to the legs of the bed below the frame, each of-said members having vertically disposed parallel openings, a supporting bar movable through one of said openings and provided with a series of notches, springactuated catch members carried by the clamping members and arranged adjacent said opening for engagement with the notches of the supporting barto retain said bar in various adjusted positions and a flexible shield detachably secured to the supporting bars in the clamping members and held in vertical alinement therewith, whereby said screen may be vertically adjusted above or below the frame of the bed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. 110
. .JOSEPH KOZIK.
