Description

A. M. BEAN. PORTABLE Nuslc SHEET CONTAINER AND TURNER. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 19, 1918- Patented June 22, 1920.
,.TNANNNTTIIN,
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT IVI. BEAN, OF COLVILLE, WASHINGTON.
BORTABLE MUSIC-SHEET CONTAINER AND TURNER.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colville, in the county of Stevens and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Music- Sheet Containers and Turners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates turner.
One important object is to provide'an ar-I ticle of this nature which is portable, may `carry sheets of music flat and may be placed upon the piano or other instrument to remain in place by its own weight.
Other objects are to provide a compartment for a selective supply of music sheets; means enabling the title of the sheets to be readily read and the sheets to be readily grasped; a lightweight closure for the cabinet and a riser adapted to directly engage the supporting rack to mount the operating handles of the turner for free operation.
With the above and additional objects, which willv appear hereinafter, in view, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as illustrated in accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved music leaf turner with the closure in open position and `with one leaf of the music sheet turned;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 isa fragmentary bottom view of the apparatus. l
-In carrying out the invention, a suitable container or cabinet section A is provided,
being4 made of wood, reinforced leather ory any other suitable material and essentially having a back wall 5, a side wall 6, a top wall 7, a bottom wall 8 and a partitionwall 9. As well shown in Fig. 3, a compartment is provided between the walls 5 Vand 9 to contain a supply of music sheets as at 10. 1n order that the numbers or titles of the music 'sheets may be readily read, the wall 9 is cut awaylas at 11. It will be realized that the upper right hand'corner of the music projects into the portion 11 as shown in Fig. 1. Portion 11, together with a cutaway portion 12, provided in top wall 7 enables Specification of Letters Patent.

Application mea october 19, 191s. serial No. 258,817.
v14; suitablyvfastened in the bottom wall 8,
at a portion which projects beyond and in frontof the wall 9. Below the sleeves, each rod 13 is formed into a crank 15 having a manipulating handle 16. Atthe top, each rod 13 is bent at a right angle to provide an arm 17. Spaced from each arm 17, and rigidly secured to the arms 13 in any suitable manner, is an arm 18, parallel with arm 17. A rod or wire 19, parallel with rod 13, may be rigidly connected to the arms 17 and 18, so thatthe arms 13, 17 and 18 and 19, will form a rectangular frame to engage the leaf, and one which will be substantially open so as not to interfere with the reading of the matter delineated upon the leaf. The arms 13 itwill be noticed are journaled at one point namely in the bearings 141. The armsr 18 `prevent undue downward displacement of the frames while the cranks 15 pre- The music leaf turners are so constructed that they may compactly rest against the wall 9 and each other, especially in View ofih the provision of an arch 20 on vone of the arms 18 so as to pass around the oppositel rod 13, as shown in Fig. 3, and in view of the formation of the cranks 15 and their handles '16 so that the right hand crank "shown in Fig. 1 will not be engaged or in- 8 and which mounts the cranks 15 and handles 16 in such a position as not tobe interfered with by surrounding structure of the piano or other instrument.
The closure for the cabinet is designated .tion is arranged over the turner as sho i C and preferably is rathe; light in nfeiglit so as not to overbalance the cabinet section when open and in the position of Fig. l. This closure may be made of any suitable material, for instance Wood, or reinforced leather. .lt has a narrow side Wall 22 pivoted by a vertical pintle at 23, to the Wall 6. Said side Wall 22 extends from a front vali 2li, from which a Wide side Wall also ei:- tends. Side vvall 25 completely closes the open side of the cabinet, particularly the music compartment, and is adapted to be fastened in place or closed position by any suitable means and for instance by means of a latch and lug arrangement as suggested at D.
The article may be conveniently carried through the provision of a suitable, hand as at E, secured to the top Wall 7.
Tn use, the music sheets desired are pl in the music compartment and the creatine section C is secured in closed position by means of the fastening l). The article ing relatively light in Weight, veniently carried from place to plare by manual engagement With the handle lil.
lV hen used in connection `with a musi instrument, for instance a piano, the r' f is mounted on the music raclr, with the 2l resting thereon. Thereupon or jjircviously as desired, the closure C is thrown into el en position as shown in Fig. l. Say a musical composition utilizing three sheets as a, 7) ai C, as shown in liig. is used. The composin Fig. 3, with the frame to the right in 1g. l between the leaves b and c and with the other frame between the leaves a and Z. Thus at the proper sequence, handle 1G may be turned to expose the contents of the inner surfaces of leaves a and Z), after which after proper sequence, the other handle 1G may be turned to the left to expose the contents of the inner surface of the leaf cv and the ot" surface of the sheet `When desired, other compositions from the music compartment may be substituted for the one shown in place in the drawings. fi/hen closing` apparatus, it ivili be understood that if of the frames is against the part tion 9 other frame may bereadily moved aj, it or if both of the frames are to the le t i. Fig. l, its handle may be turned to ,f both of the frames against said partition. Thereupon the closur may be swung to closed position as in Fig. 2 and Red;
Since merely the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be reso., ed to Within its spirit and scope.
I claim:

fi. A device of the class described having a rod, means journaling said rod, said rod at its 'upper end being bent into an arm, a sccond arm, said second arm being fastened to therod to provide a frame, said second arm engaging the bearing, and said rod below the bearing being formed into a crank, said second arm and crank preventing displace-- ment.
5. A device of the class described having a cabinet provided with a rear Wall, a partition ivall spaced from the rear Wall to provide asheet compartment, a top and a bottom Wall projecting beyond the partition, a sheet turning means j ournaled in the bottom wall and a closure for the cabinet pivoted adjacent one edge of the partition Wall.
6. A device of the class described having a cabinet provided with a rear Wall, a parti tion Wall spaced from the rear ivall to provide a sheet compartment, a side wall joining said rear wall and partition wall, top and bottom Walls extending beyond the partition Wall, sheet turning means jonrnaled by the bottom Wall and extending below the bottom Wall, a riser extending below the bottom. Wall and said sheet turning means for the purpose specilied, a closure having a relatively narrow side Wall, said side wall being pivoted to the side Wall of the cabinet, said closure having a front wall and a Wide side Wall, and a means to fasten said Wide side Wall to the cabinet.
ln testimony whereof I have a'l'lixed mj. signature in the presence of tivo witnesses.
ALBERT M. BEAN.
