CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Application sied March e, 1.915. serial Np. 12,592.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it lmown that I, JOHN HERZOG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a cabinet, and pertains more particularly to that class of cabinets commonly employed for holding music, papers and the'like.
The object of my invention is to provide a cabinet o neat and attractive appearance and of strong and durable construction, having no door, but being capable of being opened to expose the contents of the cabinet, or closed to conceal the contents, the exterior dimensions of the cabinet being the same, and its shape being the same whether the cabinet is open or closed.
A further object is tol provide a revolving shelfor drawer-holding case within the cabinet and a pivotal supporting means for the case, the pivotal supporting device serving not only to support the case, but also to retain the proper alinement of the revolving case and the stationary top and bottom of the frame of the cabinet, this result being accomplished in my construction without employing any through-bolt or other rod extending throughthe body of the case. t
With these and certain other objects 1n view which will appear later in the specification, my improvement consists in the devices described and claimed and the equivalents thereof.
In-the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cabinet closed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the cabinet open, showing the shelves of the revolving case. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section through the lower bearing taken on the line 4-.-4 of Fig. 3.
As is clearly7 shown in the drawings, the cabinet consists of a frame comprising a base 1 provided with suitable legs, a body or frame 2 fixed to the base and forming a part of the front, one side, the back, and part of the other side, as shown in Fig. 3. The top 3 is fixed to the body 2 and projects over the base 1. Between the base 1 and the top 3 is a revoluble three-sided case 4, one side and the back of which form the remaining parts of the front and side of the cabinet when closed, as shown in Fig. 3. The front of the case 4 may be provided with a suitable knob or handle 5. y
G represents the bottom of the case and 7 the top. Suitably mounted on the sides of the case are a number of shelves 8, or their equivalents. The bottom 6 of the case is pivotally mounted on the base 1 of the frame by a ball bearing pivot, the construction of which will be presently described. The top 7 of the case and the top 3 of the frame are connected by a bearing similar to and in alinement with the lower bearing.
When the cabinet is closed it is preferably rectangular in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3, the ront and side members of the body 2 and the side and back members ofthe revolving case 4 being in alinement and presenting the appearance of a continuous front and back.
When the case 4 is revolved by taking hold of the knob or handle 5, it turns in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3, past the position indicated by dotted lines, until the open front of the case comes into line with the front of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, thus exposing the shelves and their contents. When in this position the contour of the cabinet is the same as when the cabinet is closed and it occupies the same amount of space, which would not be possible if the cabinet were fitted with swinging doors. It will be noted that there is no central rod extending up through the revolving case. It is necessary, however, to securely tie together the top 7 of the case and the top 3 of the frame to prevent their warping or getting out of line and thereby showing unsightly cracks at the upper and lower extremities of the revolving case adjacent the top 3 and the base 1.
To provide an easy turning pivot of simple and inexpensive construction that is capable of preserving the alinement of the frame members7 I have produced the bearing shown in cross section in Fig. 4, in which 9 is a bottom plate secured to the base 1 and formed with a circular ball race 10. 11 is a similar but smaller top plate formed with a ball race 12 and secured to the bottom plate 9 by the clamping bolt 13 and nut 14.
Received between the plates 9 and l1 is an intermediate plate 15 having an oiiset flange secured to the bottom G of the case 4I The intermediate plate 15 is formed with two ball races, one oi'' which-,16,-is for-med on the underside ofthe plate and registers with ball race of plate 9, and the second ball race of intermediate plate is formed on the upper side of theV plate andv registers with the ball race 12 ofthe top plate 11. Suitable steel balls are provided, as in ordinary ball bearings.
The downward thrust andr weight of the revolving caseL andy its contents is sustained by the lower ball race,.and any tendency for the base l and. the topB of the cabinet frame to warp apart or otherwise separate is resisted by the bal-l bearing on the upper face of the plate 15, as will beA clearly understood from inspectionlot Fig. 4. By means of this bearing the rigidity of theentire cabinet is maintained, enabling the revolving case to turn noiselesslyandl with the Oreatest ease. rIhis smoothness cannot be aected by any ordinary degree of warping of either the frame or the revolving case.
It will be-seenfrom Fig. 3 that the depth` of the stationary body 2 is just sullicient to permit-the corners of the revolving` case to turn, as indicated by the arrows, when thev cabinet is being opened'or closed. Y
By the means above described, I have produced a simple and comparatively ineX- pensive cabinet of neat and' compact design, that is capable oi carrying heavy loads and otbeing opened' and closed without sticking or binding.
Having thus described my invention, what I describe and desire to secure by Letters Patent' is:
In a cabinet, a stationary frame having a base and top, and a case revolubly mounted therein, pivotal connectionsbetweenthe top of said case and the top of the body and between the bottom of the case and the bottom of the frame, said connections adapted to prevent separation of the top` and bottom members of thev body and case-respectively, each of said connections comprising a bottom plate secured to the frame of the cabinet, said bottomA plate formed with a ball race, a top plate formed with a ballf race, saidtop and bottom plates securedv together in spaced relation, an intermediate plate secured n to said revoluble case,said intermediate plate formed with a ball race oneach side thereof and registering respectively with the ball races of saidv top and bottom plates;
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature inpresence oic two Witnesses., A p
