PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. HOLTAN, OF OERROGORDO, MINNESOTA.
EGGeCANDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,048, dated May 13, 1902. Application filed January 7, 1902. Serial No. 88,805. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. HOLTAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cerrogordo, in the county'of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Candlers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to egg-candlers; and the object of the same is to construct a device.
trated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figurelisaperspectiveofmydevice. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the front of the casing of my candler, having a back 2 parallel to the front thereof and two diverging sides 3. p but closed at the top by a cover 4. The casing is divided into two compartments 5 and 6 by a backWardly-inclined partition 7. The front 8 of the upper compartment 6 is open, and a shelf 9 for supporting eggs is secured by means of a flexible connection 9 just below the opening 8. A wire screen 10 is stretched over the opening Sand is secured at the edges to the shelf 9 and to the cover 4 of the casing by hinges 10 of flexible material, such as leather; but any other form of hinge may be employed. curved to forma concave surface for the eggs to rest on. Strips 11 of padding are secured.
to the edges of the screen to preventinjury resulting to the eggs. The above combination of hinged shelf an screenforms a hood which can'be adjusted up and down to vary the angle of incidence of the light. Lovers 12, fulcrumed on pivots -in the'partitioni.
The reason that it is constructed The casing is open at the bottom,-
The screen 10 is 12*, mounted in the sides of the casing, are located with their short arms engaging the shelf 9. Bylhis arrangement the shelf can be adjusted by operating the lever 12.
The cover 4. is pierced by an aperture 14 to accommodate a chimney 15 to carry off the heat of a lamp 16for illuminating the eggs.
The. lamp 16 is located in the lower compartment 6 and extends through an aperture 17 A reflector 18 is secured to the back 2 just back of the lamp-flame and serves to concentrate the light upon the screen 10.
In operation the eggs are grasped three in each hand and placed on the screen 10. The screen is then adjusted by means of the levers 12 till the rays of light strike the eggs at the proper angle. After the condition of the eggs has been ascertained they are removed and six more placed on the screen. I
I do not wish to be limited as to details 0 construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina device of the class described the combination with a casing constructed to accommodate a lamp, a shelf hinged to said casing, a concave screen secured to said shelf and a reflector mounted'to concentrate the light of said lamp on eggs placed on said screen, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the
-coiubiuationwith a casing having diverging sides and divided into upper and lower com- ,partmen ts by a transverse partition, a hinged shelf located below an aperture communicating with said upper compartment, a concave screen secured to said shelf, and a reflector mounted to reflect the light of a lamp placed in said casing against eggs placed on said screen, substantially as described.
In a device of the-class described, the combination with acasing having diverging sidesand divided into upper and lower compart-me'nts by a transverse partition, a hinged shelf located just below an aperture in said upper compartment, a screen secured to said ICO shelf and constructed to support eggs, means In testimony whereof I have hereunto set for adjusting said hinged shelf to vary the my hand in presence of two subscribing witangle of incidence of light falling on the eggs nesses.
placed thereon, and a reflector mounted to HENRY I-I. HOLTAN. 5 reflect the light of a lamp placed within said \Vitncsses:
casing on eggs placed on said shelf, substan- N. H. BJILDANES,
tially as described. (J. A. II. HOLTAN.
