MACARONI-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.11-, 1916.
Application filed August 13, 1915. Serial No. 45,365.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, SILVIO F Avno, a subject of Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, residing at Pocatello, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Macaroni-Drier, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an apparatus adapted for drying macaroni and kindred commodities or articles, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character.
It is the object of the invention to provide a macaroni drier comprising a casing having means therein for supporting the macaroni, and means for establishing the circulation of air around the macaroni for properly drying the same.
The invention also includes unique means for controlling the circulation of air and ventilation of the drier, whereby the desired results may be obtained in a satisfactory manner.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a drying apparatus of the nature indicated which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being convenient, practical and eflicient in use.-
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. V
. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the structure. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line H of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a casing 1 constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material, having a suitable framework, and the casing is provided therein with a pair of spaced parallel partitions 2 providing end macaroni compartments or chambers 3 adjacent the ends 4 of the casing, or between said ends and the partitions. The partitions are attached to the front and back walls of the casing, and
to the top and bottom thereof, and the partitions provide a central fan compartment or chamber 5 therebetween, and between the compartments 3.
The .macaroni is suspended within the compartments 3, and to this end vertically spaced pairs of cleats 6 are secured to the sides of the compartments 3, formed by the partitions and the ends 4 of the casing, so
that the cleats 6 extend from the back wall of the casing to the front wall thereof. The upper edges of the cleats 6 are notched for the reception of cross rods 7 upon which the macaroni is placed, so as to be suspended therefrom. The front wall of the casing is provided with two upright door openings 8 for and co -extensive with the compartments 3, and upright doors 9 are normally disposed in the openings 8 and hinged, as at 10, to the casing to swing about'vertical axes to and from the openings 8. The lower ends of the doors 9 extend to the lower ends of the openings 8, butthe upper ends of said doors are spaced from the upper ends of said openings, and the upper portions of said openings are normally closed by depending doors 11 hingedly connected, as at 12, to the top of the casing. The doors .9 and 11 normally close the openings 8, the doors 9 being large enough, so that when theyare opened, the attendant or operator may. readily pass through the openings 8 p for. placing. the macaroni within the compartments 3.
The front wall ofthe casing" is provided with a central upright 'door opening 13 between the openings 8 and co-extensive with the fan compartment 5. The opening 13 is normally closed by an upright door 14 co-extensive with the opening 13 and hinged, as at 14 at one edge to the front wall of the casing for mounting the door 14 for movement about a vertical axis to and from the opening 13. The door 14, when opened,
permits the attendant or operator to enter the fan compartment 5 for attending to the fan, or the like. The door 14 has a window or transparent panel15 therein whereby the attendant may observe the operation of the fan from the outside, to determine the speed of the fan without the necessity of opening the casing. Each of the front doors 9 and 14 is provided adjacent its lower end with a ventilating opening 16, in which. a
ventilating door or valve 17 is hung by means of hinges 18 fastened to the respective door 9 or 14. The valves 17 swing by gravity into the openings 16, and swing open outwardly.
It will be seen that the front wall of the casing is in the form of a framework, embodying three door frames for the doors 9 and 14. A fan 19 driven by an electric motor or other actuating means is suspended within the fan compartment from the top or ceiling of the casing, and when operated produces a downward flow of the air within the partitions 2 above the respective openings. The lower valves 22 swing open into the compartments 3, and the upper valves 23 swing open into the compartment 5, following the course of the air from one compartment to another. The ends 4 of the casing are also provided with ventilating means, and to this end, each end wall of the casing is provided with a lower opening 25 adjacent the bottom of the casing, and with an upper opening 26 adjacent the top of the casing. Valves 27 and 28 are hung within the respective openings 25 and 26, and are hinged, as at 29, to the end walls of the casing immediately above the respective openings. The valves 27 swing open inwardly. The openings 20, 21, 25 and 26 are elongated and extend horizontally between the back and front walls of the easing, and the valves for said openings normally tend to gravitate or swing downwardly for closing the openings. The top of the casing 1 is provided with a hinged door 30, which when opened, provides an upper air inlet opening for the compartment 5. The door valve 30 may be swung open upwardly, and held open in any suitable manner, and the valves or doors 17, 22, 23, 27 and 28 may also be held open to the desired extents in any suitable manner.
Adjustable ventilating shutters are pro vided in the upper portions of the compartments 3, above the macaroni supporting rods 7, and immediately below the openings 21 and 26, and to this end, a pair of cleats 31 is secured to the sides of each compartment 3 immediately below the respective openings 21 and 26. A transverse series of slats or strips 32 are terminally seated upon each pair of cleats 31, and may be spaced apart more or less for regulating the flow of air within the respective compartment It is an easy matter to'insert and remove the slats 32 by simply opening the doors 11, which swing outwardly, and the slats 32 may be arranged by hand for regulating the upward current of air within the macaroni compartments, to suit the various stages of drying.
In operation, the macaroni may be readily placed within the compartments or chambers 3 when the doors 9 are opened, the macaroni being carried upon the rods or sticks 7 which may be conveniently placed upon the cleats 6 within the macaroni compartments. The doors 9 are then closed, and the fan 19 is started. The fan creates upon the cleats 6 within the macaroni compartment 5, and the air will passthrough the openings 20, swinging the valves 22 open, so that the air will pass upwardly within the compartments 3 around the macaroni. The air returns from the compartments 3 into the compartment 5 by way of' the openings 21, the valves 23 being swung open into the compartment 5 to allow the air to pass. Thus, during the operation of the fan, the air continually flows downwardly within the compartment 5 and up wardly within the compartments 3, and the air encountering the macaroni will dry the Same. The valves or doors 27 and 28 may also be opened, either by the suction of the air within the casing created by the fan, or manually, for allowing the proper ventilation of the casing according to the various stages of drying. The doors or valves 27 and 28 may also be opened for allowing a natural draft through the macaroni compartments 3 when the fan 19 is idle or stopped. The door 30 can be opened when the fan is in operation to allow fresh air to be drawn downwardly into the compartment 5, and the valves or doors 17 may also be swung open for purpose of ventilation. The air controlling slats 32 may also be adjusted for controlling the upward flow of air within the compartments 3, and by means of the various controlling devices, the ventilation and air currents may be properly controlled to carry out the drying process satisfactorily.
The device may be constructed on a larger scale, by providing more macaroni compartments 3, if a larger capacity is desired, and other changes in details can be made, within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' A hygrometer 33 is disposed in the chamber 5 to indicate the amount of moisture in the air, whereby the valves may be regulated properly. The valves may be regulated by chains or other suitable fixtures, and may be arranged to swing in either direction, in or out. The direction of the flow of air may be changed by reversing the fan, and 139 the door or valve 30 may be used either for receiving fresh air or for an air outlet. The end valves 27 and 28 and openings controlled thereby .are essential when a plurality of compartments 3 are used, but can be omitted when a single compartment 3 is employed. The ventilating means at the ends may be or may not be used, according to the circumstances.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A drying apparatus comprising a casing having a partition therein provided with upper and lower openings, the partition providing drying and fan compartments, a fan within the fan compartment for creating a circulation of air through the compartments, and circulation controlling means within the upper portion of the drying compartment immediately below the upper opening.
2. A drying apparatus comprising a casing having a pair of partitions therein providing drying compartments between said partitions and the end walls of the casing and a fan compartment between the drying compartments, the partitions and end walls having upper and lower openings adjacent the top and bottom, respectively, of the casing, valves controlling said openings, a fan within the fan compartment for creating a circulation of air through the compart- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ments, and circulation controlling means within the drying compartments immediately below the upper openings.
3. In a drying apparatus comprising a casing having a pair of partitions therein and providing a fan compartment therebetween and drying compartments between said partitions and the end walls of the casing, said partitions and end walls having upper and lower openings adjacent the top and bottom of the casing, respectively, swinging valves hung in said openings, the top of the casing having a door adapted to be opened for admitting air into'the fan compartment, a fan within the fan compartment for creating a circulation of air through the compartments, circulationc'ontrolling means within the upper portions of the drying compartments immediately below the upper openings, the front wall of the casing having door openings for the drying compartments, and doors for normally closing said door openings.
