IBEDSPREAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1920.
Application filed December 17, 1919. Serial No. 345,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, INGERMARIE Cums- TENSEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Seattle, county of King, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedspreads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed spreads, and more particularly to a combinatlon bed spread and pillow envelop of a character that will add attractiveness to the appearance of a made up bed and at the same time obviate the frequent changing of pillow slips; the principal object of the invention being to provide a bed spread whlch may be used as the ordinary spread is used, and which comprises an additional part formed therewith for enveloping or covering the pillows of the bed to protect them and to enhance the appearance of the bed when made up and to preclude the use of shams, or day casings, to cover up plllows that are slightly soiled,
It is also an object of the invention to provide a spread of this character that will be neat and attractive in appearance, and which will not be difficult to launder or iron.
In accomplishing the objects of the inven tion I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of whlch are illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed covered with a spread embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spread, with away, as shown at 2 in Fig. 2, so that the posts or rails at the foot of the bed will not cause a wrinkled appearance of the spread at these points, and will permit the same to hang-free and even. 4
At the head of the spread I have provided a pillow enveloping portion 3. This may be made as a separate piece, sewed to or otherwise permanently attached to the .spread, or may be woven with the body of the spread when the spread is made, to be integral therewith, and is made of such size that it may contain two pillows of ordinary size. The envelop comprises an upper flap m 4, preferably cut square, and which extends, when opened out, be 0nd the end of the spread, also two end aps 5 and 5 at opposite ends thereof and a forward flap 6.
The two end flaps and the forward flap are preferably of triangular form and are scalloped along their edges and extend toward a central point of the envelop. These flaps are each provided at the point with buttonholes 7 adapted to receive buttons 8 that may be secured to the top flap at, so that when the latter is folded over the pillows, illustrated at 10, and the end and front flaps are buttoned thereto, the pillows will be effectively concealed and will fill the envelop to give it a smooth and attractive appearance. If it is desired, ribbons may be used to tie the flaps about the pillows instead of using the buttons, and the flaps may be cut straight or square or in designs other than that shown, to add to the attractiveness of the spread and envelop.
In using the spread, it is placed on a bed in the usual manner, the flaps of the envelop are opened out and the pillows placed therein, the top flap 4 is then folded down over thepillows and the end and front flaps buttoned thereto, asis shown in Fig. 1.
It is apparent that such a spread and envelop not only adds attractiveness to the appearance of a made up bed, but also lessens the work of laundering the pillow slips and casings, as it is possible in this way, to cover the'soiled casing of pillows which may not yet require laundering but still are not attractive after once being used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A bed spread comprising a body portion, a pillow enveloping portion formed as a part thereof at one end of the spread; said enveloping portion comprising flaps foldable about and adapted to conceal pillows therein.
2. A bed spread comprising a body portion, a pillow enveloping portion secured at one end thereof comprising end and side flaps adapted to fold over pillows that may be placed therein, and means for securing over pillows that may be placed therein and the flaps to inclose the pillows. means for detachably securin the flaps to 3. A bed spread of the character deinclose the pillows contained t erein. 10 scribed, comprising a body portion for cov- Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 8th 5 ering the bed, a pillow envelop secured to the day of December, 1919.
spread at one end thereof; said envelop comprising opposite side and end flaps foldable INGERMARIE CHRISTENSEN.
