More particularly, it pertains to" a protective carrier for infants, the article possessing correlated improvements'and discoveries whereby'the utility thereof is considerably .enhanced. f 1 v Heretofore, in connection with protective coverings and sleeping bags, it has been conventional variously to utilize in' associatedrelatiom ship the different sections constituting the same, such as bed, cover and enclosing sections, and in many instances mattresses were in some Way provided in connection with the bed sectionas well 7 as the head section to provide a greater degree of comfort. However, too often these articles proved cumbersome, unwieldy and bulky, particularly with respect to the mattresses because it was often diflicult to fold the mattresses inasmuch as no particular line of division was provided between the bed and cover sections. "Also, such mattresses or pads, if they were of the rem ovable type, were difficult to'handle andto insert within the covering particularly because the openings therefor were too often located at re:- mote corners of the bag itself. On other occasions no provision was made for supplemental coverings or other materials to be carried by the bag other than using the integral extensions of the bed section for covering purposesf merely so as to be able to cope with varying changes in temperature and rapid fluctuations in weather conditions. 7 I,

A general object of. the present invention is to overcome these and other difficulties and disadvantages and to provide a protective can rier forinfants in particular whichis' simple', yet sturdy and durable of constructiomneat' and attractive in appearance; economic of' manufac ture and readily and easily manipulated and folded and assembled into operative position;

A principal object'of theinvention is the provision of a protective carrier having bed and cover sections associated with each other and folded into substantially superimposed position along a fold line, the sections each consisting of a plurality of layers of suitable material marginally fastened together so that pockets are formed. and communication is permitted with each pocket through an opening within one of the layers.

More specifically, it is an object of the invention to provide a protective carrier for infants which comprises a bed, head and cover sections in which the sections are all integral with each other and constitute a plurality of layers of suitable material peripherally secured together so as to 'form' pockets for each section, all of which are in communication with each other and in which the cover section is foldedalong a fold line in superimposed relationship upon the bed section,

the upper layer of material constituting the pockets having an opening therein along the line of fold so as to permit of the ready insertion and removal of a mattress or other padding material into the bed aswell as the pillow and cover sections or alternatively to provide the cover section with one or more blanlgets or other materials, the opening permitting such access being closed by *suitable means such as, for example, a Zipper.

The invention'accordingly comprises an article ofmanufacture possessing the features, properties and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in. the article hereinafter described and'thescope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawing there is'indicated generally at H! a protective carrier or sleeping bag-having a bed section H, a cover section I2, a head or pillow section' l3, each of these sections being integral in that the pillow and cover sections are connected with the bed section at opposite ends thereof. Laterally of the bed section and preferably connected thereto in some suitable manner are jacket flaps l4 and I5 respectively. These jacket flaps are provided with some suitable means for fastening them together as, for example, by strings or ribbons IS, the purpose thereof to be more fully explained hereinafter. Preferably such a mattress isof a lesser degree of thickness in the immediate vicinity of the opening as indicated at 2|, the reason for which will readily become apparent. The opening I9 is itself provided with a suitable closure means such ,as for example, a Zipper 22 which, if desirable,

may be omitted. It will now; be seen that the various pockets formed permit of a variety of uses to which they can be put. For example, a single mattress may be inserted within the bed section only and no further articles inserted within either the cover section or the head section. This matress, however, preferably is of sufficient length so as to extend up into the head section so as to provide a pillow in that area although it is contemplated that the mattress may be of a size commensurate with the dimensions of the bed sec; tion merely and that a separate pillow preferably of a softer material may be utilized in con nection with the head section. Also, the mattress neednot extend into the cover section unless it is desired to give increased and added warmth in addition to a cushioning protection. The mattress may constitute varying thicknesses of construction in that the portion within the cover section may be of a thinner material than that within the bed section, or it can be entirely separate ineach section. In addition to this, if 'it is' separated therefrom itwill readily become apparent that the cover section can be provided with at least one or more blankets which can be similarly utilized, or additionally to serve the accomplished because of the natural fold produced and permitted by'the thinned diametric section in the region 2|. After the cover section has properly been adjusted the jackets are folded over the cover section and the strings or ribbons securely tied together in a manner which will provide the necessary degree of comfort as well as holding the various assembled sections in associated and operative relationship.

It will thus be seen that the objects hereinbefore set forth may readily and emciently be attained and since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and an statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A protective carrier and sleeping bag comprising superimposed layers of material marginallysecured to provide a casing, one of said layers being provided with a transverse opening reniovably to receive a pad between said layers, said transverse opening dividing said casing into a body holding section and a cover section and providing a predetermined line of fold of easing layer thickness merely, defining thefoot of said carrier and bag when said cover section is folded over upon said body holding section and serving to guide the cover into side edge. alignment with said holding section, and means to secure said cover tos'aid holding section in said folded position.

2. A protective cover and sleeping bag as defined in claim 1 containing a pad extending throughout the body holding section of said casing'and into said .cov'ersection, said pad having anarea of diminishedthickness coincident with said line .of fold to per mit of ready folding and alignment of said sections into associated cooperative relationship. v
